I see some relation in this song to a gay couple - one person wants to be out and open about their relationship and the other is more hesitant, keeping it quiet and only something acknowledged when they're alone. The first verse especially sounds like it could be about this. The relationship is hidden from friends, and what they would say if they learned about it - coming out as gay is still social suicide in a lot of places. The 'who should I be' part of the chorus is all about how the singer would have to change to be able to go out in public with their boyfriend/girlfriend, how as they are, they're not someone that their boyfriend/girlfriend will take out in public and that the part about how 'this time in our lives will soon be in the past' is them realizing that they're not going to change and it's time to part ways. It relates to both gay and straight audiences, but I just see some subtext towards it being about a gay couple. YMMV |
