The song is actually about John James. He was the lead singer for the band from 1985-1997, I think when the band "voted him off the island." They had found out that his wife had left him and he had a drinking problem so Peter Furler suggested that he "step down for a while" to sort things out. The song was written from the perspective of John James' daughter who was very young when her dad left. The beginning of the song says: "Is there a reason other than your past?" John James' father actually had the same problem as he eventually did. James, however, turned his life around by the sounds of things. He's now an evangelical speaker. I love the solo Jody does at the end. If you read into Jody Davis you find out that he left the band for his daughter and then he and his wife eventually split. He had custody of his daughter for several years and took care of her in Yuma, AZ before returning to the band. He's the best. It's hard to find a guy who really practices what he preaches :) |
