Vampire Weekend – California English pt.2 Lyrics 8 years ago
first off, this is a brilliant production and I can't believe I never heard it until now.

second...this song just perfectly exemplifies an outsiders POV to California...Maybe their first time into what it's actually like to live there (through this chick). He questions everything and the environment as a whole.

by the end of the song...the outsider finally makes up his mind about the girl (she's smart, cool, yet trendy). and seemingly so...falls in love with her (or really just thinks hey, California ain't so bad).

This is confirmed by the last few lines:

"how many towns have they've claimed that they know you"
(everyone thinks they "know" california and what it's like good or bad...the majority of the time, everyone is wrong and full of shit.

"how many nations think that they own you"
(from the previous poster...I believe that yes, so many different cultures in LA alone that claim to be authentic (and mostly are) but also this could be in reference to other cities / cultures saying that California is "lesser" in a way.

"how many simple maps think the same sun don't shine on the sunglasses now"
(this just screams to me that smaller minds / smaller cities think that Californians are full of shit and that all those "sunglass wearing" people aren't really happy.

All this to say...as an East Coaster finally moving to the West Coast and seeing more and more a glimpse into California (he seems to be speaking specifically of LA and SoCal) that all of this imagery is accurate and that most of the East Coast generally wishes this state would just fall right into the ocean. What they forget is that everything they're actually wearing / watching / mimicking was (for the most part) created, curated, bought, sold, and distributed by California.

absolutely love this track!!

This is Spoon essential.

Lyrically, it's a masterpiece.

It conveys that sense of longing, nostalgia, where you're headed.
We're all looking for something whether it be love, an adventure.
We don't know how to find it, where we're going, but we know we have to do it.
And this song is a reflection of that...of someone who's done that.

It is the only song that seems to enhance the meaning by an abrupt cut-off ending.
Seriously...go listen to it!

This beginning totally reminds me of Blur's 'Advert'

love this track!

I think it's about love and the emotions that go with it and how people do things without really knowing why. We all view love in certain ways, and see picture perfect scenarios that may not be real but we want to try and make them real and try to find the ones who will make that real.

I love the line:

"where your Dad's not around
and all the trouble you look for
all your life
you will find it for sure"

"Times that we met before we met"
- I think of this as when you first meet someone that you end up trying to date for awhile and you're looking back after the breakup or after the fact.

"How come it feels so familiar
when you've never been there" ...speaks for itself. it's like a nostalgic feeling.

Awesome track!!

has anyone else picked up on the 'hidden' vocal at the very end of this song. And by that I mean, how there's a 'breathe' (gasp) on the right speaker when Eddie sings (but not much longer)...

this song is beautiful.
