I see where you are coming from with the whole reflection of his life. You can see that with the second set of lyrics he is talking about the hound dogs bones, and then he says, "It reminds me of the time I told you long ago:" and then goes into what he supposedly told her long ago, where the hound dog is alive and likes to run so it is an obvious reflection on his life. I think the line: just like me, just like we are supposed to be is referring to how the hound dog doesn't like to be chained up and run free- and he is saying that is how humans should live their lives, unchained, and then the second to last line he says, "before I was chained to this country by way" saying that looking back on his life he wishes that he did all those things that he talked about to the girl and now that he is dying is realizing that he spent his whole life chained up. The last line is just him saying that he wishes that the girl would have helped him lead a more free spirited life like he had talked about.
