I don't know if this is out of line, but this is my favorite modest mouse song. from personal exprience I've concluded that this is a break up song, like "Broke" The first line: "If food needed pleasing You'd suck all the seasoning off Suck it off!" it's so damn hateful; who is he referring to when he says "you'd" bang your head like a gong because you have the completely wrong idea treat me like disease, like the rats and the fleas March into the sea to find another suiter, there is plenty of fish in the sea so that's my backing. from personal expirience this is my favorite. |

i think this song was written to incompass the sorta mission statement of the band. they are realist. so the band was named built to spill to encompass the theme of gloom and realistic expectations should be low. grungey just how mama use to serve it :] |

I haven’t any doubt this song is about cigarettes. The first verses are of the burial of his father; his death must have been what opened his eyes to the dangers of smoking... makind it a perfect opening. the part i'm in the dark about is the woman mentioned "The face of a saint The voice of a symphony She says 'The future will be devoid of weaknesses' Free cigarettes For all the kids To make small skeletons" at first i thought it was a love interest that was his motivation to stop smoking, but now i'm thinking the woman is smoking itself, the voice of a symphony, maybe refering to the calming, or soothing effects of smoking. i know it seems like a stretch but thats what i thought of. my favorite part in this song would have to be the second verse that starts with "as they laid" it picks up heavy guitar, and just sounds epic. it's what really drove in his desperation also; I love crime in stereo one of the top, right under Have Heart |

ok this song isa masterpiece. it's beautiful, the way the chorus "its all i belive in" repeats, it's both melodic and powerful. this band is the essence of indie music. and on the fisrt verse at the end in a couple songs theres always a "goodnighht" to something its a nice signature |
