| The National – Terrible Love Lyrics

One night after dark I was walking my baby daughter to sleep in a stroller, and we came very close to walking into a web with a huge spider in the middle of it. I just happened to be listening to The National on headphones at the time too. That's when it occurred to me that this song is about the love a dad has for his kids and how complex that love is. During an early televised performance of the song (on Fallon maybe?), Berninger mentions that terrible love is a good thing. That fits. It's incredibly difficult being a dad, but it's worth it.
Anyway, that's what the song is about for me. |

| The National – Looking for Astronauts Lyrics

We're all looking for a perfect person to date/marry. Astronauts are ideal humans because they qualify for the job with their above average physical abilities and mental aptitudes. If you hold out too long looking for this perfect person, it might be too late to find anybody. |

| The Smashing Pumpkins – Spaced Lyrics

This has got the be the scariest of all Smashing Pumpkins songs. I think it's a stream of consciousness stemming from the topic of Billy's dad (although I realize it doesn't necessarily need to be based on reality). The words about the name Billy also suggest this, since he and his dad share that name. The line "I was born whole" reminds me of the "cut their little child" line from Disarm, as if he's speaking of the division of time with his separated parents and how the experience fractured him, maybe made him less pure. That topic combined with the space transmission-y sound of this track gives me chills. |
