I think this song is about him fighting with himself. Schizophrenia. The doctor is not a doctor in the plain sense, but a psychiatrist. The point of view is the personality on the inside that is now being suppressed. Imagine being the voice in your own head but the other 'you' is blocking you out. Let's call the one in control of his body TOM and the supressed conciousness TODD. TODD's begging TOM to not believe what the doctor is saying or he'll walk away, when you need him. But he's hurt, and self aware, maybe TOM is better off without him...But that means he'll disappear. |

To me it seems obvious that he's talking about nations going to war; Ones that were once allies, perhaps. It also simulates human reaction to fear of their enemy, not feeling sympathy for them. "Cold silence has a tendency to atrophy (cut off/kill) any sense of compassion" But it's from the POV of a citizen who watching nations fight over who's to blame and who's right, essentially watching mass media in his nation who's involved. "I've done the math enough to know the dangers of a second guessing; Doomed to crumble unless we grow and strengthen our communication " This line makes this song for me. It speaks to the inner voice saying 'I know what will happen if we don't strike first, regardless of how I feel about it.' It is beautiful really. |
