Coldplay – Violet Hill Lyrics 13 years ago
"When the future's architectured
By a carnival of idiots on show"

I think it cuts a bit closer to home than religious lunatics - George Bush and Tony Blair, perhaps?

"Was a long and dark December
When the banks became cathedrals
And the fox
Became God"

Perhaps the lyrics are trying to say that money has become their new religion, with the banks as their places of worship (cathedrals). As for the fox - it's Fox News.

I believe it's about the Crusades, not about how "Obama is letting the Muslims take over".

Madonna – American Life Lyrics 13 years ago
I heard this song on the radio again today. As I see it, Madonna is telling us that she has all these wonderful things and yet she's not satisfied. "And you know I'm satisfied" basically means that the narrator believes that we as listeners share a materialistic view of the world, and the repetition of the phrase in the rap tries to trick us into believing the hype.

Finally, she tells us to stop and think whether the high life is so wonderful after all - "Do you think I'm satisfied?". She goes on to say that the "modern" American dream is not as wonderful as the media makes it out to be.

U2 – Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me Lyrics 13 years ago
I think the "thieves" are the record / movie executives - some big stars start their own business and take over production of their creative work, basically "stealing" the profit that would have gone to the abovementioned people.

"turning tricks with your crucifix" refers to the artists that use religion to either promote their product among the specific religious group targeted, or gain more exposure by being controversial, e.g. Madonna. (I think there's even a reference to this song in "Vertigo" - "girl with crimson nails has Jesus 'round her neck")

Eurythmics – Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This) Lyrics 13 years ago
That's actually the way I interpreted it as well. Everybody tells you that this car (or this home, or a holiday in the Bermuda triangle) will fulfil you, but in the end we are all different. We should do what makes us happy.

Now that I see it typed out, I'm also amazed at how little lyrics there are.

@crazy Yes, there are two cows in the music video.

All depends on how you do it ;)

Adele – Someone Like You Lyrics 14 years ago
I have to agree with MusicHasMeaning and Cecilia, it's "two". Almost like "You Oughta Know" - "nothing but the best for you both"

Suzanne Vega – Luka Lyrics 14 years ago
I think it fits quite well with Luka denying that there's anything wrong.

Pet Shop Boys – West End Girls Lyrics 15 years ago
Originally I interpreted it as the class separation between the West and East End, like "Uptown Girl". Now I'm not too sure anymore, because most of the other interpretations make complete sense as well. I guess that's what makes it such a good song - it speaks to a lot of different people.

The "underground" could refer to visiting a gay bar in the past, with the narrator worrying that he is being watched ("too many shadows" and "whispering voices").

Katy Perry – Peacock Lyrics 15 years ago
Nah, she's just trying to be controversial (think "If You Seek Amy"). You do have a very good point, though.

KT Tunstall – Black Horse and the Cherry Tree Lyrics 16 years ago
The way I see it is, as quoted, the song is about difficult decisions. To me, however, the black horse and cherry tree represent different parts of a single person. When asked to enter a long-term relationship with the person, the speaker only sees the black (dark?) horse and not the cherry tree (stability, innocense). That is why she sends her heart "to the middle of nowhere... with a big black horse *and* a cherry tree".

Following the decision, she realises that she has made a mistake, but it's too late to correct it.

One of my favourite songs. Heard it a few years ago, and have been hooked ever since :)
