| I think that sounds pretty good. Don't know if it's what they meant but it makes sense. | |

"I think I'm drowning Asphyxiated I wanna break this spell That you've created" I think in this song Matt actually is talking literally from the point of view of freeom, justice, and truth. I think this part is talking about how freedom is "drowning" in the restrictions of government. Freedoms are slowly dying under the iron fist of the government. It seems they have created some kind of "spell" that keeps the masses dumb and keeps them in their state of suffering. It also keeps freedom and the truth locked away. "You're something beautiful A contradiction" I think this is talking about how government can look like a "beautiful" solution to problems at times, but this in itself is a contradiction, since government itself is the source of most of our problems but is a necessary evil. "I wanna play the game I want the friction" In order for freedom to prevail over tyranny, the masses must "play the game" of revolution and rebellion. They must create "friction" or conflict and take the power back from the hands of their oppressors. "You will be the death of me (x2)" Freedom is talking to the oppressors of the masses saying that they will be the death of freedom if something doesn't change. (Chorus) "Bury it I won't let you bury it I won't let you smother it I won't let you murder it" Here, I believe it switches to the voice of the people, the revolutionaries. They tell their governments that they will not be denied their rights as humans beings and that they will not let them "bury", "smother", or "murder" their freedoms. "Our time is running out Our time is running out You can't push it underground You can't stop it screaming out" The people are frantic now because their "time is running out." Soon freedom will not even be a memory. They scream that the government cannot "push" their freedoms "underground" and that freedom will come "screaming out" no matter what they try to do. "I wanted freedom Bound and restricted I tried to give you up But I'm addicted" Talks about how the people "wanted" their freedoms but now they are "bound and restricted" by the governments they set up to defend those freedoms. They "tried to give them up" but they were "addicted" the the welfare, the social security, the things government supplied them with. "Now that you know I'm trapped Sense of elation You'd never dream of Breaking this fixation" Those in charge now that the masses are trapped and are glad about it, have a "sense of elation." The governments would "never dream of breaking this fixation." "You will squeeze the life out of me (Chorus) How did it come to this? Ooh ooh ooh yeah yeah yeah" Pretty self explanatory there. This is just my own interpretation. I don't know if this is what Matt intended the song to mean but this is what I got out of it. It makes sense to me in keeping with Muse's political type songs on this album and there others, but it could be about something else. Thank you muse for making a great song, whatever you really meant it to mean. |
