LOL There are other people who spend real time finding song meaning websites, actually registering with a username and then instead of contributing a meaning, they tell people they are wasting their time. Go figure :-)

Brewer and Shipley – One Toke Over The Line Lyrics 14 years ago
I think this song is talking about the end of life...ready for death to come and take you away.

In the first line, he is waiting for the train to take him home...he's talking to "sweet Jesus". Obviously in this case, 'home' is heaven. In the 5th line, he's talking to "sweet Mary".

In the first line, second verse, again he's talking to Jesus when he says, "Who do you love, hope it's me" And at some point everyone who believes in God says 'I can be better, I'll change." This is the next line, "I've bin a changin', as you can plainly see". The 'Joy' and the 'Pain' that his 'momma said' is, I think, teachings, stories and hardships learned from the Bible...easy to read...hard to obey.

The singer strayed from faith and religion "a country mile" (a long way). He experienced life, probably good and bad. Now he's back with a renewed faith and a glad heart. "showin' off a smile". With his eyes open, by golly, he can see The Way...

...and he's ready for the train to take him home.

Never thought I'd agree with Lawrence Welk, but this is a spiritual...

Blue Öyster Cult – Don't Fear The Reaper Lyrics 16 years ago
Has no one ever read Peter Pan? He is the boy who is afraid to grow up - and eventually, to die. Wendy becomes the love of his young life - but she IS growing up. That means she will leave him in his eternal youth (earlier I read a comment about this song being about vampires. Hmmm, also eternally young, or unchanging)

I think this entire song is point-counterpoint as two people might debate the issue. The first two lines are Peter, Second two lines are Wendy's answer.

He says that everything is now (as in youth), she says that all things have their time and pass away unafraid of going.

He says, "Baby, take my hand..." and she replies, "don't fear the reaper."

Then he says, "We'll be able to fly..." (Peter Pan can fly), and she repeats, "don't fear the reaper."

Not sure how this fits in, but 40,000 are the number of rightious souls admitted to heaven (so says the Bible.) I don't think suicides are ever admitted to Heaven in Christian dogma.

But, I think that Wendy is finally enticed to try Peter's way of life (eternal youth) and the last verse is virtually a description of Peter Pan flying up to Wendy's window, opening it and then eventually taking her hand and flying away to Never, Never Land - looking backward only to say goodbye.
