Neutral Milk Hotel – In the Aeroplane Over the Sea Lyrics 16 years ago
i only really read the first page of interpretations, but for me this is a pretty sad song. i mean it's deep and beautiful but i feel like it's sorrowful.

"What a beautiful dream
That could flash on the screen
In a blink of an eye and be gone from me
Soft and sweet
Let me hold it close and keep it here with me"

basically what they had is gone and he's trying to hold onto it

"Love to be
In the arms of all I'm keeping here with me"

the memory

"How I would push my fingers through your mouth
To make those muscles move
That made your voice so smooth and sweet
And now we keep where we don't know
All secrets sleep in winter clothes
With one you loved so long ago
Now he don't even know his name"

the fact that he needs to push his fingers through to make the sweet and smooth voice come out. possibly another reference to death and or anne frank... the lover being unable to speak on their own. "we keep where we don't know"... feeling lost... "secrets sleep in winter clothes"... buried somewhere... "with one you loved so long ago now he don't even know his name"... again being so lost and confused

i think there is definite melancholy aspect to it, but that somehow he's also able to find peace in all of it. it's a delicate balance, and he does it so well here... if anyone has heard one neutral milk hotel song it's "in the aeroplane over the sea" and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that

of Montreal – The You I Created Lyrics 16 years ago
for me this song is about someone you know in real life and how they can be so different in your dreams. the subconscious mind paints them in the most beautiful way... you dream about them in the way that you ideally perceive them and your interactions with each other. at one point i was a psychology major and i learned that the subconscious mind can't lie to you the way the conscious mind can. consciously people are sorting through details, senses, and feelings and trying to interpret exactly what it is that they want (so human). the subconscious mind doesn't have this issue, because beneath the humanity of it all everyone needs exactly the same thing from a relationship... to be loved, supported, and have a definite sense of companionship. i'm gonna be honest i haven't heard this song but i love of montreal and i was just clicking around on their lyrics when i found it. it struck me in the weirdest way cause i had a moment just like this last night... waking up to see that that person (or all the people in your life) don't meet that standard. it's really disturbing. when you're in that dream it's like bliss and there aren't any problems, you just understand each other and everything that's going on. it's like pure love. and then to be ripped from that and find yourself searching for it again in a world full of people that are lost and searching for it as well... ugh.

i'm gonna find this song

i've had this song on repeat for the last week. staroftrackandfield is right... obviously about someone breaking up with the narrator. kevin's ability to write a song that truly encompasses a specific emotion never ceases to amaze me. i love and hate being able to relate to this song.

i think you can't really comment on this song with talking about the whole ep and kevin's interpretation and repackaging of both his own material and others' as well.

i love how different kevin's voice is on the sony connect ep. this combined with acoustic guitars (for me very reminiscent of the older albums) creates a very unique experience. in the context of the rest of the songs, it's a very pensive ep that i think reflects on past experiences. for me it's almost about being confused and mixed up in your emotions. it's about love, but it's also about the struggles therein.

first off: love the song... the acoustic version off the sony connect ep is amazing (along with the rest of the tracks on it). highly recommend getting a hold of it if you haven't.

second: everyone pretty much has the meaning down as far as the song goes, but i too think it's ridiculous that anyone still really debates kevin's sexuality. if you wanna go way back to cherry peel the track "tim i wish you were born a girl" is evidence of that. mind you it pushes the boundries of sexuality (like kevin HAS and probably will continue to do), but seriously... if he were gay he wouldn't have to wish that a guy he finds attractive were a girl.

finally: the new songs. skeletal lamping is a concept album that centers around kevin's onstage persona georgie fruit. georgie is in many ways similar to david bowie's ziggy stardust and if you don't understand the connection i'm making here you really need to run to a record store or go on itunes and buy some bowie. georgie's story is all over the internet if you want to do research. also... this is what kevin had to say about the album being gay: "What I was trying to do was create this idealistic human consciousness where anything goes and there are no restrictions and no boundaries."

should shed some light on the sexuality questions...
