Arctic Monkeys – From the Ritz to the Rubble Lyrics 16 years ago
This song means so, so much to me - its basically narrated a whole weekend of my life.

At every club there is one decent bouncer and one hardman bouncer who you'll try to avoid - at this nightclub I went to, I finally got in (being under 18). There's always the anger and depression of not getting in somewhere, and having to make the walk of shame outside having been rejected. I've done the swapping jumper thing, and my friend was even wearing the same jumper as his older brother, whose ID he was using.

Anyway, get inside the nightclub and meet a girl who I know vaguely, and have kissed once before. Drinks flow, and by the end of the night we're openly proclaiming our love for each other, so much so that in the spur of the moment, we say that we'll go proper "relationship, love" all the way. Next morning, I go into town and who's in the shop but the magical girl from last night - awkward and embarrassing moments are had, and the ridiculousness of last night hits home. The lines "I said a thousand million things..." and "last night, what we talked about..." were never more apt. Wonderful, wonderful song.

Basically, he's so, so happy that he feels that anything could happen - the whole world could be blown up, but he wouldn't care, because he's with someone he truly loves.

Elbow – The Bones Of You Lyrics 16 years ago
"Do I have time? A man of my calibre, stood in the street like a sleepwalking teenager, no."
Years have passed since his romance, and he's now a busy man in an important position - he doesn't have time to be lovesick.

"And I dealt with this years ago, I took a hammer to every memento"
He's overcome these feelings long ago due to some method, and has forgotten, or chose to forget his past encounters with this person.

"But image on image like beads on a rosary pulled through my head as the music takes hold"
The song that he's heard, the lyrics just keep reminding him of a day spent with a former love years ago, and the images of that day keep going through his head because of this song, and it takes hold of him slowly.

"And the sickener hits; I can work till I break but I love the bones of you
That, I will never escape" Then it hits him - he can do whatever he wants to try and forget or dismiss it, but no matter what, the memory of that day will always be with him.

Its a brilliant, brilliant song!

Elbow – Some Riot Lyrics 16 years ago
the "Beautiful quivering chivalrous shambles" line sounds so, so beautiful. Garvey knows the beauty and brilliance of his friend, but the alcohol is turning him into a quivering shambles - a shadow of the man he used to be. Says so, so much in just a few words that sounds so effortless.
