| A.C. Newman – Homemade Bombs in the Afternoon Lyrics | 12 years ago |
|
This song works on some sort of visceral level. Though the more I look at it, the more I must have no idea what it means. Lots of dangerous sounding things being described. Ruins must of got that way somehow, and bombs seem a likely culprit, They are both doing it. Then the suggestion that it could all be done again next year. |

| The Decemberists – Red Right Ankle Lyrics | 12 years ago |
| For the gypsy uncle, I agree, But why would someone who found a key to such an adventure then throw it away? I think there's two parts: first, she's afraid of what she might find, But second, the loyalty part kicks in and she makes sure that she or no one else discovers anything to disrupt the picture in her head. She's a romantic. | |

| Good point on the subject of the song. Other people are judged, but not her. | |

| More than the lyrics, I love the textures of sound in this song. | |
| Counting Crows – A Long December Lyrics | 15 years ago |

I attached myself to this song not long after I started a divorce. The emotion, memories, self-blame, and forgiveness all wrapped up in a nice package resonated perfectly with my own feelings. I agre wtih mouchoirs interpretation for the most part. I also agree with the low moods in December as well as that being a new beginning - what with the days beginning to get longer again. The relationship is over, and most of him knows it, but the longing wont go away; and yet, a dip in the ocean might help life seem to move forward, at least for another day. The Hillside Manor part is not a talk with the old flame, it's with a friend he can talk with about it all. Also the futility of trying to "hold on to these moments as they pass" is both a longing I share and something I know can't ever be attained - a romantic fools-errand, but in modelin moments, also something that one needs to cling to to put some value into all the effort that went into the relationship (cause it can't just be wasted time - can it?). |

Thinking about this a bit more I'm still having trouble attributing the Cicero quote about people not knowing history being forever children with "ice that will never melt from hearts of the modern Children of Cicero" If that is it's only meaning, it's a little too clumsily phrased (to fit in with the other excellently written lyrics). When I see "Children of Cicero", with no other context, my first impression is Cicero's offspring (literally or figuratively), not the people who he said were like children beause they were ignorant. I think if the reference was the latter one, there would have been another qualifying word in the lyric. I can see it possibly refereing to that AND somehting like the interpretation I volunteered, since there seems to be clear layers of ambivalence already going on in the peice. |

| They Might Be Giants – I've Got A Match Lyrics | 16 years ago |

This is definitely a relationship gone sour. "The cat is on the mat" is a typical setup for logical arguments in philosophy and linguistics trying to get at the nature of truth. So she's into that somehow and she picks apart everything he says, or at the very least, they argue a great deal in formal ways. "I'm going to die if you touch me one more time Well I guess that I'm going to die no matter what" I think he said the top line and she corrected him with the second. So when he says "I put a rock in the coffee in your coffee mug", it is such a precise description of another a priori truth (showing he gets it), while at the same time delivering a crass insult (he just doesn't care), the ironic balance is hilarious. The last two lines of that paragraph are showing that they've made trust and truth a competition between them and the winner depends a great deal on their own biased perspectives. |

The first set of lines is his frustration and longing. The second set is more mysterious to me, as I grew up in California, and I've often heard comparisons betewen East Coast people (cold at first but eventually true) and West Coast people (warm at first, but fickle) that I have not found to pan out in reality. However, going from those steriotypes, a "False Family" seems like something that acts like a family, but has no actual blood ties (and how much does that matter when you find kindred souls?). Getting in touch with like minds can certainly light you up in a way that can seem unatural, like a "holiday tree in the summer" But then, "Lead us there" is an unconditional surrender and a lovely irony when viewed up against the preceding thoughts. It also, I think, lends a woderful serenity ot the whole peice. The ice never melting, I agree, is the attitude or hearts of those he's longing to be with (the people that are never there). The "Children of Cicero" is a compliment of the highest order, but also a forward lookig hope of intelligence, hard work, and raw potential. This is a love song, so lead us there. |

| Counting Crows – Round Here Lyrics | 16 years ago |

This song for me boils down to deep regret, so deep and final she must be dead (or now dead to him). Only his memories and feelings remain to roll around tortuting him about what he should have done. Disturbing, risky, and odd facts are revealed as if to add up to something; some conclusion he should have reached before it was too late. |
