| Dream Theater – Trial of Tears Lyrics

Everyone has made good observations about the song's lyrics. Did anyone notice some of the band's influences creeping into the song? The intro sounds like Dream Theater's tribute (or rip-off depending on your point of view) to "Xanadu" by Rush. The instrumental section in the middle of the song is very reminiscent of the instrumental solo section of "Losing It" by Rush. And perhaps the most obvious influence is in "The Wasteland." The beginning of that section almost verbatim copies the melody and chords of verses of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" by The Beatles. |

This song is a brilliant scathing critique of "All You Need is Love" and the general hippie ethos. |

This song is about the rise of neo-Nazism in Europe and how people seem to feel helpless to stop it. The lyrics, like the lyrics of "Forgotten Sons," express a cynicism in the government's ability to do anything to stop the violence ("We place our faith in human rights/In the paper wars that tie the red tape tight"). |

This is another one of Fish's excellent rants about the music industry. The imagery in the song is just so good, and I love how the music continues to build in intensity as the song progresses.
What's especially tragic about this song is that even after the protagonist dies, someone else just pops up to take his place, destined to make the same mistakes the protagonist made ("Somewhere in a tenement, in a well-thumbed magazine/Someone finds a photograph that triggers of a dream/The uniform that symbolises the comfortable life/He's always known his luck's in but now he's found the drive"). |

| Marillion – The Last Straw Lyrics

In the liner notes to the remastered version of "Clutching at Straws" and on the band's web site (http://www.marillion.com/music/albums/cas.htm#band), you can read the band members' recollections about the turmoil that was going on in the band during the time the album was recorded. The band was exhausted and under a lot of pressure from its record label, and Fish was on the verge of quitting the band.
Given this context, the "The Last Straw" seems to summarize Fish's frustrations with life as a rock star ("We make futile gestures, act to the cameras/With our made up faces and PR smiles") and feelings of hopelessness. Nothing like ending a dark album on an incredibly bitter and pessimistic note! |

| Emerson, Lake & Palmer – Tarkus Lyrics

This is my favorite song by ELP and a real masterpiece of progressive rock. The song seems to be about the futility of war.
The "Battlefield" section of the song shares a lot of similarities with "Epitaph" by King Crimson. I read that when ELP played "Tarkus" in concert, they'd play some excerpts from "Epitaph" when they got to that section.
Did anyone else notice the band paying tribute to "Mars: Bringer of War" (from "The Planets" by Gustav Holst) at the end of "Tarkus?" The ending to "Tarkus" and ending to "Mars" are very similar. |
