White Lies – The Price of Love Lyrics 16 years ago
I agree with you on this. I listened to the song a few times totally unbiased and it instantly related to my life at present.

I intepreted it that it wasn't a ransom, more of a man fighting another for what he wants, with the woman attracted to the man who treats her worse. The man who is protecting her is the theoretical more desirous man, as he defends her "Don't lay a finger," shows this.

From my experience, give a single lady a choice of two men, the one who protects and the one that disrespects and the woman will normally go for the latter. It's more fun. Shown by the whole 'running away with money i.e. exciting' portrayal seen in this lyric.

The song shows that perhaps there is no set material Price of Love, as different people value love differently. The man who runs off with the money is material, he wants the money not her. Seen as the polar opposite as the man who wants her, quite happily gives away his winnings- money is not as important to him as love.

I think the image of "Hero" is definitely sarcastic and ironic, as he then shouts "Wait for the Dove". A hero is normally seen as the image of peace and the fact he tells her to wait shows he was in it for one thing only, and that is what he has ran off with.

I really rate this song, hence why I look into it quite deeply. I would definitely encourage reading into it as I have, as I believe the ransom is symbolic of the levels that some men will go to, in order to try and win back his true love, and how quickly men can also change to that of being opportunist, seen by the running off with money.

Also, could you say that the fact he raises 800k not 1mil as being symbolic of no one being perfect? Just a thought.

Sorry for the essay, hope I have done the lyrics justice!
