i've always thought this song was about a friend who has a problem with something, maybe rape, abuse, drugs, and the friend doesn't know if he should be a friend and keep it a secret, or tell. that was always my interpretation of it. |

omg this song is absolutely beautiful. it like serioulsy makes me choke haha and almsot cry especially when he sings "where i cant move" ahh, chino, your voice is sooo amazing anyways I think castrophany is totally right. forced seperation and the title is just like an example of that, like death by plane. |

i'm almost positive its about drugs and the war/bush thing because maynard called this song 'pet' and placed it on 'thirteen steps', an addiction-based album and then made a remake and put it on 'emotive' a war-based album, so in this case, 'pet' is about a drug talking about a user i think. drugs make you so incased in yourself and surroundings and there could be war and murder and death going on all around you and the drugs will just make you not really care. its the drug talking to the user. even notice that at the part "go back to sleep, safe and ignorant", the music softens up as if like the drug is safe and an escape. that's what I thought of at that point. the song has two meanings i think thought, that's why there are two versions. |

okay first of all, this is my favorite song by nirvana. it's sad and kind of eerie and the lyrics really hit home and are so intense, despite being so simple and straight forward. kind of weird how this is the last song before he died but I don't think its a suicide note. i agree with the majority of you who say that this is about him leaving the band and courtney love. i also like to interperet the, "You Know You're Right" part as him singing that to himself. telling himself that he knows his choices are right. the only part that baffles me is "steaming soup begins to melt" maybe it could be seen as his career was so amazing but slowly dwindled? or maybe he was "alive" so to speak and with the fame and everything hitting him, he kind of just "melted" away. anyways amazing song. i love you Kurt RIP |
