| Mumford & Sons – Dust Bowl Dance Lyrics | 15 years ago |

I think this song is about judgement. I'm not largely educated on the Depression, but from what I've read it does sound likely that that was a running theme which in some way was connected to the meaning that came to my mind. To me it sounds like the young man is him, and he has turned away from God. Without God he feels like he can gain little from the world and it's bone dry. The young man stands on the edge of his porch The days were short and the father was gone There was no one in the town and no one in the field This dusty barren land had given all it could yield I agree that the hill is probably Calvary. I think he's basically saying that when you turn away from Christ you find life isn't quite so rich and free. It sounds like he then fond his way back, and in the chorus he's saying 'Judge me, mock me, smash my pride to a pulp... I don't care.' Society is the accuser, and he goes on for a while about how corrupt it is. Then it seems like he's saying 'If I was Christ I would have got out my gun and killed them all by now'. But then in the last verse he realises that that would make Christ sinful like the rest of society, and that those thoughts are just him again. |

"For your sake I hope heaven and hell are really there, but I wouldn't hold my breath" I think what Isaac is really saying in this is that you can't just live your life in anticipation of an afterlife, or you miss out on actually living. the last part "but I wouldn't hold my breath" has a double meaning - he's saying that you can't count on there being an afterlife but also that you should go out and do something with yourself an make the most of what you have! |

There are angels in your angles, there's a low moon caught in your tangles. That's probably the single most beautiful thing I've ever heard. And combined with the acoustic guitar... This almost brought me to tears. I love it. |

| Modest Mouse – Never Ending Math Equation Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
For a lot of the song he seems to be talking from God's point of view. If something, like God, is an actual infinite, then every part of the whole is the same value as the whole because every part of infinity is infinite. So the line "I'm the same as I was when I was six years old, And oh my God, I feel so damn old" is basically explaining this - God will always be the same age and yet doesn't it get tiring having been around for infinity? And yeah, the on a plane bit - basically highlighting God's transcendency and probably saying how God and human's, to Isaac, will never understand each other. "Oh my God, I've got to, got to, got to, got to move on Where do you move when what you're moving from Is yourself?" That's probably saying how it must be so dull being constant and an actual infinite - unchanging. He's saying how God must want to change but all there is is him, he can become nothing else. He will always be constant. I think it's kind of cool how he keeps saying "Oh my God" etc, as for God to say that wouldn't be blasphemy. Aristotle said that God must constantly contemplate himself as this would keep him eternally happy as he is perfect. So he just calls out to himself, because to him, that's all there is. And yeah, the 'Oh my God and oh my cat' - I agree with others he's making a parallel between God and any other creature. saying something about how creation is special? Ahh I don't know. But yeah, there seems to be some stuff about evolution etc. And as others have said he seems to conclude by saying he'll never know anyway. And I agree with the stuff about the never ending maths equation being the "unified field theory". It seems to me that he's contemplating the existence of a deist God that exists objectively but has no interest in the universe, as Aristotle put it. Those are just my theories :D |

| Bob Dylan – Sara Lyrics | 16 years ago |

I may be named Sarah, but i was only named that because my father had a stutter and mine was the only namer he could pronounce without doing so. I like to pretend I was named after Sara Dylan, I so wish I was. My boyfriend introduced me to this song at the start of our relationship and it is now the most played song on my ipod - 500 plays in 5 months. He told me that the descriptions reminded him of me and I was so touched! I will always love this song. My favourites: (from the live version) Sleepin' in the woods By a fire in the night Where you fought for my soul And went up against the odds I was too young to know You were doin' it right And you did it with strength That belonged to the Gods" "Sara Sara whatever made you wanna change your mind Sara Sara So easy to look at, so hard to define" "Sara Sara Whereever we travel we're never apart Sara Sara Beautiful lady so dear to my heart" "Sara Sara Scorpio sphinx in a calico dress" "Sara Sara glamorous nymph with an arrow and bow Sara Sara son't ever leave me don't ever go" ...beautiful, thanks Dylan! - also, note in how on teh video of Sara Live he only looks at one particular spot in teh audience. Apparently Sara was in that crowd... !!! |

I love this song! My boyfriend played it to me when we first started dating, he said it reminded him of me - and my name is Sarah. (not Sara Dylan though, sadly) It was the first I'd heard of Bob Dylan and I've loved it ever since. Now i'm into a lot of his stuff, although Sara still holds the winner on my playcount with over 500 plays in less than 4 months. "Sara Sara Whereever we travel we're never apart Sara Sara Beautiful Lady to dear to my heart" - he sent that to me when I went on holiday. But the last two verses, i have to say, are my favourites. The last verse is so touching and is unmistakibly one of the most pasisonate. But I just love the poetic imagery of "Scorpio Sphinx in a calico dress" - beautiful! And the way he sigs it - caw! I'm not going to write any meanings or interpretations because it's pretty clear. The passion in his voice... when I found out that Sara was watching him sing this on the other side of the glass I cried! That's just...wow. To think that that very voice I'm listening to right now was singing to her right then... Also in teh live version, he is staring continuously at one distinct point in the crowd. I've been told that she was in that crowd. Just...wow. And although I LOVE Sad eted Lady Of The Lowlands, it doesn't hit me like this. I love the poetry and the mysterious imagery in that song - but it doesn't grab me. The passion in this song, fo0r me, makes it teh greatest song of all time. |
