Graffin's taking a GEOLOGICAL (see Graffin's academic acheivements) perspective here. That record indicates the claim, "We have not control." We could end up trapped in a limestone or granite matrix just like the specimens in the the geological record that leads to the claim, "We have no control." This is supported by a paraphrase of the "father of modern geology" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Hutton), "There's no vestige and no prospect of an end." Read: Life can turn on a dime. |

I worked at a men's homeless shelter for three years (Portland, OR) and this song makes complete sense to me. |

Without "equality" the "bleeding-heart 'liberal'" could not arise. This song's meaning is clearest when you triangulate, "Now everybody's equal...just don't measure it," with, "Now everybody's praying...Don't prey on me."

Pinkfade does it again!!! Once knew a "kid" (ten years or + younger). Met him when I was a baker. Clearly didn't like me. Later, saw him one day and decided to sell him some pot. We started hanging out. Listened to Bad Religion together. Said he loved the song "Do What You Want." Next thing I know, someone (probably him) steals $1,200 worth of weed from me and my wife.
To be fair, it was him or our roommate. (50/50). |

Quoting Castrophony, "I just want to encourage everbody here to think for yourself, and not believe everything Greg Graffin says just because he puts it into a song."
Amen.

Contradiction scmhontradiction. "Everyone's a hypocrite" (Man With A Mission; Gurewitz). I don't think Gurewitz would mind anyone pointing out he'd contradicted himself in this way.
Pinkfade's heading in the right direction. Maybe there's a GOOD relgion. Gurewitz doesn't dismiss/denounce religion, just BAD religion, for example, Christianity: the Cross in their "Cross Buster" emblem, which, I don't think means, "No Christians Allowed." |
