Sometimes as a man grows older, he loses parts of himself just to live his life in some semblance of peace with his family. The young man that he remembers is still there, just hidden under obligations and concilatory gestures of love. He just doesn't have the strength or stamina to call upon this glorious image of himself any longer. When the liquor starts to flow, it strips off the layers of the current man like refinishing an antique until, finally, the original piece is uncovered. It seems that in the day to day living of one's life, we lose who we used to be, the one person whom we thought we liked and didn't hurt the ones we love. As time passes, we tend to meld into our spouses in ways that are not consistent with what we think we should be like. This is the basis of conflict between the responsible man and the man we think she married. Fun just seems to dissappear into responsibility. I also see someone torn between career and family olbligations. We want to be in all places to experience the joys of life, but just can't seem to find time for any. The healthiest way to live is to pick what is MOST important and move toward that goal. I wish I could tell you what that one thing would be, but it's different for everyone. As we are hurt by others or hurt others, we tend to push those feelings down and try to forget. This only masks the pain and in this way, we also can lose parts of ourselves. In relationships, we never end as the same person that we started the relationship being. That's just life, we all grow and change. Sometimes for the better, sometimes not. |
