how does what you just said make it more about drugs??? I see it from my own first hand experience....only when the drugs wear off and sobriety hits do I feel the depression or "feel like dying" and even as high as I can get, its never high enough...my life is my addiction and my addiciton is my life... |

Sure he may of been in a mental house at the time, but I don't think this song is only about that...that is one example and he didn't get there in one day...For me this song strikes a deep chord and I take it to be about how you feel different from society whether it be inferior or weaker or different, and society notices that and "they send you back to bed" or back to wanting to isolate your self due to how different you feel (especially if you suffer from mental illness such as depression), and in doing so trigger emotions of despair and depression. Down the only road it ever takes, is depression. Anyone who has been in isolation knows all too well that it is a dark and colorless place. "youll keep your doors and windows shut" is about you keeping your self locked away and isolated and never showing a soul who you really are due to fear of rejection and more bad feelings...and isolation will always push you down the only road it ever takes wich is depression...not death but despair... |

I don't think you have to be Christian or even religious to get this song and its meaning on a deeper level. This song to me is about the fact that behind all of the good or bad we've done in life, weve all started with a clean slate if you will or an empty cup...our experiences and our enviornments can greatly impact us in profound ways, and these events may have very well influenced John Wayne Gacy's actions later on in life, that being said these events could happen to any one, unfortunately it was a mixture of these elements and I'm sure genetics that caused him to steer off into this mental state, and the fact of the matter is that none of us can say for sure that if given his circumstances we would be able to control ourselves or get help. If given a different set of shoes what might we become?? |

To Colin B I must agree that Elliott wrote a lot about how he felt and quite frankly Elliott Smith has a place in my heart that no other artist on this earth could match, but to say all his lyrics are crap is a bit much, he is talented in his own right and to be really honest he doesn't sound anything like Elliott to even be compared to him, they are totally different sounds. His music is profoundly beautiful and there aren't many artists who can put music and lyrics together in such a way that you could be crying one moment and feeling joyful the next. Also Colin who are you to judge music, when you clearly know so little as to put him and Elliott in the same category. Just because he doesn't sound the same doesn't mean that he doesn't have talent...it's funny that those who know so little about music are the first to criticize someone else for the art they give to the rest of the world...I am thankful for Sufjan's music, had I not found him I definitely would be missing out... |

This song reminded me of when my grandfather died, I prayed and prayed and prayed but it didn't help to save him, and anyone who witnesses a loved one's passing remembers all too well the moment in wich they are gone but you could of sworn you saw their chest move up and down....The lyrics within this song get me everytime as soon as I hear the line "in the morning when you finally go" I ball like a baby, very few songs can pull at my heart strings in such a way. |

I actually did go to school in oly, and it sucked balls....the song is pretty self explanitory.....but for oly high it fits perfect...everyone there are sheep white upper middle class drones that talk walk eat sleep and sh**t the same....amazing how many narrow minded right winged abercrombie wearing puppets go to ohs since olympia is a fairly liberal and unique town....whatever the case Im glad im out of that hell hole anymore or any highschool for that matter |

this song for me is about being numb, like the verse "im covered in skin no one gets to come in", its about being disconnected from the rest of the world. I also feel this song is about being in that state and wanting so bad to be "pulled" out of it. You get so used to seeing the world and everyone in it in ten shades of grey, and then you experience something or meet someone and you finally are ready to see the "color" or the vibrance in life again, and that readiness becomes eagerness and even desperation at least thats how I percieve it, doesnt really matter though music is medicine so however someone takes it is the way it is at that moment for that individual... |
