I always loved this song. I knew it was an anti-suicide anthem. But, it really didn't affect me much until my friend killed himself. In fact, I was with that friend one night, and we were in the car, when this song came on the radio. We both knew the words and we both sang along. Later that night, he hung himself. I guess the song wasn't enough to make him reconsider. |

I think you're mistaken in your analysis of the line about the needle. Let me explain:
"Circle me and the needle moves gracefully back and forth, If my heart was a compass, you’d be North"
A needle is also the name of the little thing in a compass that points North. He's saying that if she circles him, the needle will move back and forth, following her, because she is his North. His heart will always point him towards her. |
