I think this song is about a Christian's struggle with bitterness toward God. It is the "dark night of the soul" experience when a believer is going through a rough time and experiencing much grief "These lonely tears I cry/They keep me in chains and I wish they'd release me" The believer knows that God can reach out to him and give comfort "With Your arms open wide and You try to embrace me" and he also knows the consequences of turning from God "Cold is the night but/Colder still is the heart made of stone, turned from clay" There aren't many people more bitter than those who experience God and then turn from him and turn their hearts to stone. Much like what oviazcan said, it is the experience of a believer growing in God. It's much like C.S. Lewis' A Grief Observed where the believer knows the right thing to think and how God is but his emotions and feelings fight against his knowledge. There was a struggle between Lewis' knowledge of who God was and how he felt toward God in his time of grief. When you first become a Christian you do see things as very black and white but as you grow you come to realize that the only thing that is truly black and white is Christ's sacrifice and everything else is very gray. Our grief is characterized in this song as being black and white because when you go through a hard time you see things in extremes. In the end God promises that if we follow him that will fade to gray. |

I also agree with you completely and I'd take it a step further and say that the first satanza and the first part of the second is specifically referring to the creation story as told in Genesis. He stumbled into faith and thought, "God, this is all there is?" The pictures in his mind arose, And began to breathe. And all the gods and all the worlds Began colliding on a Backdrop of Blue. He took a step, but then felt tired. He said, "I'll rest a little while." |

| Personally I'm not a fan of the emo/alt poor me I'm so downtrodden lyrics. That said, it's probably just Regina. I'm admittedly not very familiar with her music. I do, however really enjoy the melody and singing and I think I can get past the lyrics. It's musically a very beautiful song. | |

| I don't have much to say about the lyrics of the song except that I love the line "the morning is for sleeping." I connected with that immediately. I work nights and am accustomed to sleeping in the morning. My sleep is of the best quality then. As for the melody, I always enjoy songs in minor keys. This song as a personal favorite. | |

| well, as I said, "...to me this song is an allegory of our relationship (as Christians) with God." I think both our interpretations are somewhat based on personal experience. | |

I think this song is theistic if not religious. I think she's first trying to say that no one thinks of God or such philisophical things unless there is hurt or a fundamental need. Secondly, she seems to be saying that possibly, but not limited to, religious people, or such people who are the exception to her first idea; those who think of God or a deity really have no idea of the character or meaning of such a being. The lyrics are a bit offensive, I think, for theists and atheists alike. Does she herself claim to understand such things? I can't complain about the music though. It's a very catchy song and I like it. |

| I agree with the op. This song definitely has a religious slant. However it is not contradictory for a person to be a logical theist. Great minds have stood on both sides of the line. | |

This may not be completely what the athors intended but I interpret the song to be talking about living a life holy for God. I find it very hard when I am not surrounding my self with fellow Christians with good teaching, insight and discussion. "I have no fear of drowning, it's the breathing that's taking all this work." I too really like this line and its honesty. I relate to it this way: I don't have time to worry about "drowning" in or being consumed by the larger problems in my life when it is hard enough just living my life daily for God. |

I'm not sure what the author(s) intended but to me this song is an allegory of our relationship (as Christians) with God. At first to me it sounded like a really bad relationship but as I listened to the lyrics it seemed to be alluding to our desire to please and love God in our weak and prideful way. "I give you flowers, give you candy to even out the guilt." sounds to me like our feeble attempts to please God and make amends for our sins in our own strength. We try to do all the right things but our best could never please God. He wants our devotion. "You'll always make me sad, but that's what true love is all about." could be talking about Gods passion for us and the fact that we always fall short but he is always faithful to us and forgives us. Equally, it could be speaking of the fact that true love is a commitment and completely transcends emotions. (Love)...endures all things. -1 Corinthians 13:7 |
