I think this song is quite simply a metaphor for leaving your old life behind and taking a risk at trying to move forward and accept the changes that happen along the way. I think the line "I'm leaving the light on just for the sight. Might make someone think that I'm still around" is like saying you're leaving an old part of your life behind but you're holding on to the memories so that there's always something to remember it by. This person clearly has a negative attitude towards their life though, and they're "walking rounds in search for stars these nights" - which in my opinion means they're trying to find some glimmer of hope in what has become a "perfectly brown" and boring existence. "I pick up stones 'cause I might need them (You're gonna throw 'em, won't you?)" - in my opinion is a metaphor for preparing yourself for the hardships you might face whilst "finding stars", the glimmers of hope. And the line "I tried with books, but I'm not pleased yet (Come on and read it for me, read it for me)" is the person saying that they've tried to find an easy way forward through the experiences of others but they haven't found an easy solution. But that's just my interpretation. |

In my interpretation this song is about a person who is just drifting through life with an unhappy and possibly defeatist attitude. The "mountains" are things that this person wishes they could have but haven't managed to obtained because "light squares and bodies are all [they] see", meaning that they are just living what they consider to be a meaningless and automated existence where they don't really see anything of any distinction or substance. I think the line "since you broke down, since I broke down, since we broke down" is like the subconcious of this person identifying that the person (which the singing voice is obviously a part of) has undergone some sort of hardship that has made them give up or "break down". I think the chorus, on the theme of this interpretation, is pointing towards the subconcious of this person being like their well-wishing-inner-best-friend (does that make sense?) Who would "jump into [their] grave and die", which means that when this person dies the positive subconcious aspect of their personality would die too - and the line "and on my word you'll give up your whole life for me" is this positive subconcious assuring itself that the person the song is about, given the chance, would return the favor. And perhaps the lines "and you'll be reborn bigger and stronger and less alive" is the voice saying that this person could succumb to the vacuousness of their life and become a "stronger" person but then their life would be even less worth living. I think the "cross your fingers, hold your toes - we're all gonna die when the building blows" part is a metaphor that basically indicates "cross your fingers and take a risk (to get out of this rut), and the worst that will happen is that your life with remain pointless" - in other words there's nothing to lose. "And the house that you were born in is crumbling at the corners" in my opinion means change is coming and there's nothing you can do about it, nor should you try and stop it. And the line "sagging skin and feet of crows, feet of crows" is like the subconcious of this person trying to remind them that life is fleeting - we're only getting older - and we should make the most of it. But that's just my interpretation. |
