Between the Buried and Me – Fossil Genera - A Feed from Cloud Mountain Lyrics 15 years ago
Well, if it matters to anyone, I actually got a chance to ask Tommy outside a show here in Memphis back in May, (we flagged/yelled him down while loading gear for Mastodon). I asked him where he got the title from, and he said he saw "fossil genera" in a random Wired.com article, which all I could find in reference was an old piece on actual fossils (the term referenced a species of dinosaur a few of the subject fossils were from), and i asked him if it had to do with Freemasons or any specific cults/clans, he just smirked and said "eh.. something like that.." Doesn't specifically open any windows into his writing philosophy, but i was satisfied just to get an autograph (on my ticket ^.^)

Also wanted to ask about the future of Jacob Rogers (love that shit!), but I was so star-struck I totally forgot :P

okay so I figured it out... these 5 men are aliens themselves, sent to warn us of the impending doom about to befall our entire earthly civilization in so many ways, wrought by siblings of their own kind. Think about how they blend the BEST singular elements from every damn musical style known to man into a soup to warm your soul in the darkest, coldest place in your mind. They are drug-free and are all vegan or at least vegatarian (and even if you eat meat, that's fine, but the way we manufacture it today is garbage) I'm ashamed to admit I don't practice all of these things, but I CAN see the good in them. Their religious affiliation appears to be null, though they seem "spiritual"... it's almost too good.. nah screw that, it's awesome. I notice how the smart ones really latch on to it, as if this sound was a beacon to the would-be heroes of a forsaken race.....us. I hate to sound like a worshiper, or an elitist, but damn it's good. I guess Avatar 3D did something to my brain.... best movie ever btw.

the end.

Metaphors, people, double entendres, surely nobody thinks this song is ONLY about some imaginary group of people in Tommy's head, with no ties whatsoever to their personal experience in the music industry. It can be both. It can be a concept album and be more than one concept. It's their experiences anthropomorphized into characters and settings. I mean this group defies labels and blanket summaries for a living. Sorry, I just know a few "metal snobs" who won't listen to things that aren't "black metal" or "death metal". No deviations, no explorations. They make me sad. Everyone's interpretation on this whole album are correct.

- It's a must these days, colors are fading... fucking amen.

I was wondering, anyone know what suburb is pictured on the album cover? I browsed around raleigh, NC, but didn't see anything resembling the cover photo... I figured this would be the best place to ask :) Figured it would be an interesting piece of trivia.

I recently had a moment with this song..... I have this security job on the weekends where I am by myself 8 hours at a time in this huge lumber factory that's shut down and for sale. I'm somewhat of an introvert about my voice, but I always wanted to be able to sing fairly well, just for shits and giggles. So now I've got all this spare time (and CONCERT HALL acoustics to play with), and this song has been my warm up mantra whenever I get the chance to practice. It's been so awesome. "Sing with the fear", "silence is broken...", "fear: the control tower", I mean there are so many levels of bravery and persistence in this fucking song. Dunno who wrote it, but I like to think it's from Paul's perspective, getting the nerve to be lead vocals on a track, but I could be reading way too much into it. I usually do with their stuff. Sorry to rant, but I've really FELT this song lately. I listen to this album at least 3 times a day... interupted only by another journey through Colors...

you guys want long and all-over-the-place? try Genesis' 23-minute "Supper's Ready" on Foxtrot from 1972... it's not metal at all, but it's proggy for sure, and very epic, both in musicality and subject matter. something tells me that Tommy and Peter Gabriel would have some interesting conversations if they ever got together...

right on, it feels like the journey from the point of view of the new initiate into any cult. at first, the rantings and ideas of this madman are abrasive and blunt, but you're intrigued, nonetheless. then as the song moves into the more somber part, it feels like the initiate coming to terms and relating with the ideals. just as cult leaders will sooth you with "understanding" and that you "belong" because the rest of the world has thrown you away, basically taking advantage of your confusion. then it moves back into madness, as the follower begins to feel genuinely engrossed in the causes of the collective, and takes on the agenda as his own. it's too late, there's no turning back.

btw - lol at the horse whinny at ~6:55

if you listen carefully, on the Colors: Live DVD, Tommy says "seems the high horse is taking -YOU- all home..." instead of "them". Wonder if it was intentional or maybe a Freudian slip...

Maybe it's me, but this song is totally about themselves, making this INSANELY diverse music, and not fitting into the standards of modern popular music. Seems like it comes from a VERY personal place, trying to convey a sense of the bravery they have to muster to take the chances they've become known for. I mean this song itself is taking a chance, though maybe not for this crowd. Everyone I've read posting here seems to get it. I have yet to see more than two lamers on this site that just don't "get" this band. But I introduce BTBAM to people I work with, even metalheads, who just can't tolerate the softer side of this group. Like it makes them sissies for diggin' some falseto vocals, or a song like this. Just like Backwards Marathon, or Aspirations, totally an introspective song to me.

on a side note, dunno if anyone notices, but on the Colors: Live dvd, Tommy says, "seems the high horse is taking -you- all home..." instead of "them" on Ants of the Sky, I lol'd.

Shit I wouldn't mind being Tommy's employee right about now. UPS has awesome health insurance, but it certainly doesn't cover resurrection! Eat that, Jesus!

Between the Buried and Me – Obfuscation Lyrics 16 years ago
First of all, this band soooo fucking nails the formula of intro/2nd track cohesion. When Tommy's keys bleed into "Obfuscation" at the end of the intro, I get the biggest goosebumps since first hearing Colors (which STILL gives me chills EVERY TIME I listen to it). If there was anything I would hope to be repeated on each album, it's that combination. Of course, these two stand apart more than previous pairings, (I simply can't listen to "The Backtrack" without "Decade of Statues", and vice versa) I mean, "Mirrors" is three and a half minutes, but it's still an intro next to the beast that is track 2 :) They have their seperate appeal, but the chemistry is there nonetheless.

I love "Close one eye, step to the side..." because I actually have been playing with my vision that way since I was a kid. You know how if you're looking at something with one eye, then the other eye, it seems to move, even if you sit still, because it's actaully a slightly different vantage point for each eye? Always been fascinated by that :) I think it just speaks to the idea of looking at things from a different perspective. "Obfuscation" means "to confuse or obscure" (everyone's in fragments, the great misdirect, etc), while "Mirrors" eludes to there always being a reverse to anything you might think you understand, and the brain references obviously point to perception in general. I mean come on, when is Tommy NOT talking about EVERYTHING in the damn universe? I imagine this 2-parter is all about the human condition and our feeble presumptions of our purpose here, and our perception of this experience... whatever it is.

Also Tommy is telling us to put a bib on because our "brains" are in for an auditory feast :) Heh, sorry, my ears are so gay for this band...

Between the Buried and Me – White Walls Lyrics 16 years ago

They DO make a point to thank/tribute the various artists that they, themselves, were raised on. The cover album The Anatomy Of Between the Buried and Me shows this passion well. You'll find the likes of King Crimson, Earth Crisis, and even Queen (all of which they do flawlessly, in my opinion)! I, personally, have been INSPIRED by the sheer undeniable talent these cats have shown, especially in a live setting. I have picked up a guitar again (after 10 years without), and I'm even working on my singing voice, just to have as a skill and sing for my kids. I don't wanna be a rock star, fuck rock stars. This band has convinced me that there is a warm and fuzzy feeling about having discipline and doing something good (and doing it well), even if the status-quo doesn't acknowledge it or reward it. Art IS it's own reward. Their stamina and technical skill ARE the stuff of "guitar-Hero-esque" worship. You make a valid point about "directing the audience", Tommy Rogers is doing no less than casting a spell (in the most esoteric sense of the phrase) with the line "We WILL be remembered for this", but there is a fine line between arrogance and confidence. A line they are far from crossing. It should be noted that a. Within the same song they say take this or leave it, it doesn't matter to them, and b. note that the first person to post on this forum is the author himself, who is proactive enough to make an effort to connect with the fans. On the Colors:Live DVD, the only words out of his mouth beside lyrics to the songs are thank you's to the fans. The worship this fanbase gives, they certainly got back that night. I have a brighter outlook on life because of this album, and maybe this seems like mindless ass-kissing to you, but the fact remains, these guys are the most talented quintet of any genre you care to copy-n-paste on them. They will be remembered for this.... white wall.
