I heard this on the radio for the first time today and I almost couldn't believe how relevant the lyrics are to my current situation. For the past year I've been in a long distance relationship with someone who I met online but have yet to actually meet (it was a legitimate relationship, despite what many think about online romances). I tried so many times to meet him face to face, but it never worked out because of personal issues he was having. Over the past week he just completely cut off communication with me for the second time in our relationship - so in that sense, I want him to literally just "say something" but at the same time I'm exhausted from trying so hard for so long and I'm giving up on him and the relationship for good. One of the most heartbreaking lines is "I'm sorry that I couldn't get to you;" to me it's apologizing for not being good enough in his eyes to really reach him emotionally. Also, "anywhere I would've followed you" hits me especially hard because I was willing to move across the country just to give our relationship a real chance, but even that was not good enough. To me this song is about letting go; accepting that love isn't always enough to keep a relationship going ("You're the one that I love, I'm saying goodbye"). You can love someone with everything you have and sometimes it's just not enough for the other person. |

This is one of my favorite songs on her album, and this song is amazing live in concert. I think that this song is about a woman who is realizing that her relationship with a guy is coming to an end. Even though they are still technically together, they "have been dead for a while", meaning that things just don't feel like they used to. I also think that she is coming to terms with the fact that she has to let go and is realizing all the faults of herself as well as the guy's faults. "I'm still breathing" to me, sounds like she thought she would never be able to go through with actually breaking up with him, but once she did/does, and she's still okay. She wants to end the relationship before things get worse. |
