Uhh... Lem is apparently the speaker's name.
The Shins are a pretty decent band; I get it. But too many people think they are like THE greatest, deepest, most specialest band ever. Not so. Not every lyric (by ANY artist) will have some deep-seated meaning (or any meaning), as much as many will assume. Sometimes lyrics are nonsensical, added because they need to finish a rhyme or something. |

Always sounds to me like one of the guys says 'Let's smoke some bad, Steve' and then Steve replies with 'Lets smoke some butts'.
Also, I'm almost fairly sure this sound IS adlibbed. He sings himself into a couple corners and then backs out-- so either there were written lyrics and he misread them and they liked it, or he just made it up. That would attribute to the complete nonsensical and fun nature.
