| The Decemberists – We Both Go Down Together Lyrics

If this is in fact a prequel to LAL, it could make sense if the mother is pregnant when she jumped off the cliffs of Dover. She was noticeably pregnant which is why the lovers had to jump in the first place. She obviously jumped to her death, but the jump could have caused her to give birth, but obviously there was no one around and the baby died that morning. LAL does reference, "she birthed me far too soon" which could make sense in this context. All lyrics aren't meant to be taken literally. Some could be metaphor or poetics. |

This song is about conformity and about someone who has decided to renounce the rules of obligations of society or live away from them. To most of society who live in conformity with societal rules and obligations, this person (or hermit) is crazy, or "has bats in the belfry" and may see someone who lives outside the rules of conformity as someone who is "boiling society," or who lives outside of conformity in order to show disdain for everyone else. Someone who is living outside the rules of conformity may see him or herself as "in the open, catching all the leaves" or in other words, living their life with a freedom that no one else has. "We all see what we want" is pretty self-explanatory...everyone sees something from their own perspective, whether it is the truth or not. |

I've been listening to Dispatch for about ten years. What I've learned is that most of their songs are written as stories or poems and are not to be taken literally, but each has a distinct meaning. This particular song actually is about drugs, but instead of promoting them, the band is actually providing commentary on the life of a junkie. Those who said that the song is discussing the meaning of life are also correct. The song actually reminds me of an old Indian folktale of a man who was seduced by a woman who possessed him and the only way that he could get clean again was venturing to a sacred river and meeting the guardian of life who cleansed him by instilling in him a new meaning of life that led him to abandon his old ways of womanizing and drinking. I think that that's what this song is about, the life of a junkie who has become enlightened by some higher power (the old man), be it God, knowledge, or just a newfound respect for the sanctity of life. I actually view the woman in this song as the substance or the addiction. In essence I believe that this song is telling us that everyone has power over their own life and also the power to change that life around at any time. |
