I think the snake (the Devil) is appealing to Jesus' humanity in his time of "weakness". The snake is telling Jesus that he doesn't have to die, that the two of them could live happily ever after. I think the family is more of a metaphor for earthly happiness. What do you think about this interpretation?

The interactions between the sheep and donkey and the baby Jesus are brilliant.

But I have always been puzzled by the cardinal's declaration, knowing that it was Biblical but not being able to locate it. Well, I found it. The cardinal's words "Bring low the hills that the valleys might be filled" are from Isaiah 40:4. They are then repeated in Luke 3:5 with respect to John the Baptist preparing the way for the Messiah.

It's evident that Aaron is well-versed in Scripture. There are countless references in this song alone:

idea of goats as sinners-Matthew 25:31
"deep cried out to deep"-Psalm 42:7
"the disciples fast asleep"-Matthew 26:40-44, Mark 14:37-42, Luke 22:45-46
"this cup might pass"-Matthew 26:39, Mark 14:36, Luke 22:42
"crushed beneath the foot"-Genesis 3:15
