Of Monsters And Men – Dirty Paws Lyrics 11 years ago
My personal interpretation seems to differ a lot from many of you.

Starting out I picture an average suburban neighborhood in maybe the 60's. There is a father with a son (my head is an animal). Children act like animals in some senses; The wildness and innocence mainly. I imagine the son mowing the lawn doing afternoon chores and meeting a dragonfly who comes and goes as he pleases, but is the kid's friend as the son comes out every Sunday to mow the lawn and meets up with the dragonfly. One day the dragonfly returned to the boy, old and withered. It tells the boy about the fate of the natural world in years to come and flew off.

The next verse I believe is the story the dragonfly told to the boy. I picture a small animal, maybe a fox or a wolf pup dashing through the trees while industrial logging machinery tears through the woods. The trees used to sing of the birds and the bees but that time is long gone. The bees, having their homes destroyed have no where to go and instead make their homes in the gutters, sheds and doorways of the people who took their forest from them. The verse describes an animal revolution. In real life terms I see this as the occasions where a bear will turn up downtown in a heavily populated area. The animals push back into the land that was taken from them.

The transition to the next verse starting with "And for a while things were cold" makes me think of a time period of stagnancy. The animals lost their war. For years they were quiet because they couldn't fight back against the weaponry of modern civilization. They live with what they can in what was once a lush forest, now reduced to stumps and piles of bark and branches.

The first thing that came to mind when I heard "the beast with those four dirty paws" was a car. The black dirty wheels of a car belching smog and toxicity as it barrels down a forest road. At the song's end I picture the boy all grown up staring at the once lush forest with tears in his eyes as he was warned of the world's fate decades ago by his dragonfly friend.

Obviously it doesn't perfectly fit the lyrics in certain places, but it's worth listening to with this interpretation in mind.

Almost sounds like the side effects of doing drugs.

It's about how bitchin people try to change the world instead of just accepting what it is and living with it. Are you going to control the world, or let it control you?

Machinae Supremacy – Need For Steve Lyrics 16 years ago
It's about a man who doesn't want to just be another mindless drone living in the world. "I will be forever, I refuse to fade away into the never," means that he is dedicated to being immortalized by society and he won't just fade away out of history like everyone else.
