Talking Heads – Sugar on My Tongue Lyrics 14 years ago
Growing up in the sixties I saw so many jokes start with 'borrowing sugar from the neighbor', which always implied sex. I'm convinced that he speaks to that same scenario. "She's my neighbor, fill my cup" is where it starts. "Will she gimme gimme some?" says it all, to me. He also refers to her as a unique lover.

Then he states that his friends want to see her put the sugar on his tongue - so anything's possible!

Now - how about the music? This song was twenty years ahead of its time, like so much from Talking Heads.

Thanks to DB and the group for this gem!

Talking Heads – I Feel It in My Heart Lyrics 14 years ago
I agree with Qlikser - this has to be one of the most incredible songs I've ever heard. It's at the top of my favorites from Talking Heads.

Simply wonderful. As to its meaning, like much of DB's lyrics, it's happy and carefree. "I feel it in my heart" suggests to me that he's now certain that what 'they're' saying must be true - that 'she' has done something to make him a fool. Starting over is out, and he can no longer hide his feelings inside. (That's not his way!)

A simply beautiful and awesome melody, funk, rhythm, and vocals, as is typical from this talented group.

Talking Heads – Stay Hungry Lyrics 14 years ago
I think this one's quite simple. This (phenom genius) artist is prompting someone else (their partner) into a (more?) physical relationship - immediately.

Play it again, a bit louder (feel it), and imagine you're singing this to your partner, just before the act. Of (certainly intense) love.

OK, now read the words as you play it, one more time. You tell ME what this song means!

Thanks, and to DB, of course.

Morrissey – It's Not Your Birthday Anymore Lyrics 16 years ago
I suspect this is not between consenting adults. That's based on the line "Cannot be given" meaning "ignore all the codes of the day".

That last quoted verse is from "Stretch Out And Wait", another beautiful song (from the Smiths) about the same topic - child molestation.

Note: I suspect these refer to ugly experiences in his youth.

But then, who knows? I love this man.

Morrissey – It's Not Your Birthday Anymore Lyrics 16 years ago
Thank you, Duffo. As I listened I heard paragraphs that didn't sound quite right. Sure enough, when read without music, this one is quite clear.

In my opinion, these are words an adult might instruct to a child were that child being molested.

As usual, it only makes me love this man more. Just like Quentin T, Morrissey can place us in very uncomfortable situations (his?), all whilst enjoying some beautiful tunes.

Check out "You Have Killed Me". Read the lyrics without any music.

Thanks again, Duffo!

Morrissey – Dial-a-cliché Lyrics 16 years ago
Perhaps. I'm wrong often. I followed your link, read the clip, pondered, and no, I think that's a stretch.

But then, you're probably spot-on, as only he knows what he really meant!

Morrissey – Dial-a-cliché Lyrics 16 years ago
Thanks, EddieB. As with all else, this is just My Humble Opine...

This is one of his 'prettiest' songs, as I often wake up singing it.

Growing up with a manic Brit dad myself, I think you're right.

My dad used to comment on my sexuality, as if his words might shape it.

He often came up with such terms.

"Fey-way", or fag, gay way. My dad was often quite verbally clever.

'Scrap your fey ways' rings, to me, his dad's request (hope?) to stop being so gay-ish.

Whatever that means.

There is no doubt, to me, that this song was slanted (aimed) towards his dad, as was "Late Night, Maudlin St."

Again, IMHO.

Thanks, Eddie!

Morrissey – At Amber Lyrics 16 years ago
I read this one differently. He (you know who) refers to his invalid friend's phone call, "If I had your limbs I would steal away". I believe this means that his friend says "take a break", which he does.

To the Sands hotel, where he calls his invalid friend to report of the slime and the grime gelling, complaints of sleeping on the floor, etc.

In other words, a promoted escape (to the Sands, of all places!) that turned out bad.

"In our different ways we are the same".

That's what's great about interpretation - who cares? Heh!

Thanks

Morrissey – Alma Matters Lyrics 16 years ago
Thanks, PrettyPettyThief, for sharing your opinion, and I agree this is a fabulous tune musically.

I'm still getting my arms around the lyrics, and your post is aged, as am I~!

Nonetheless Alma Maters sits up at the top of my play list, for its musical freedom, so far. Your interpretation helped quite a bit.

Morrissey – You Have Killed Me Lyrics 16 years ago
Perhaps we infer a bit much with this release. Italian reference may be mere subterfuge.

When interpreted simply; one entered him (the artist), for the first time, using a key, and "did your best butt".

As he (the incredibly beautiful artist) lives and breathes, this other person killed him, and though he walks around, somehow, he's been killed.

Those are the words. Perhaps it now hurts him, bad, somehow, just to walk around.

Figure it out. Or (like me), don't. Rock out to it. It DOES rock.

It does not matter whether 'he's gay or hetero'. Those that ponder miss the point - he's celibate, and can be neither. So, for the first frigging' time, ever, it really does not matter.

Thanks to him.

Also, this status / image serves him (and us) very well.

I cannot help but interpret this as his first gay encounter.

I say 'gay' because that's the word we use.

He sells so much (beautiful) music, on his terms, because we ponder, and I love him.

We all do.

Thanks, Morrissey, for this very debate.
