Pretty obvious to me what it means: The point of the song comes into full focus at the lines "The will to death is what keeps me alive. Limitations are set; only then can we go all the way." It means that knowing that we are bound to die makes us want to do so much more with the little time we have. |

I think it's about how when the Chili Peppers first acquired fame, John didn't want it, so he left, did his whole drug thing, advanced as a human, and rejoined the Chilis when the time was right, and he was ready for fame. That, and how he almost died from his drug abuse and got a second chance at life. |
