| This song is nearly a perfect rhythmic copy of Bauhaus' 'In the Flat Fields'. Peter murphy plagarizing...himself? | |

I'll give my best guess, but this song is so ripe with symbolism it's crazy.... It's about soul mates. and impossible or incompatible love. The speaker has something broken about him and he is warning his lover of that. The two last lines of the first verse communicate that the coldness he has (being broken) will keep her there... sadness/pain can be beautiful between lovers; the need to take care of one another. It's in the blood; i met my love before i was born. (there's no control over the way they feel about one another, it's in their blood; they are star-crossed) she wanted love, i taste of blood- she bit my lip and drank my war from years before. (she wants love, but i am full of hate/violence. she can drain me of hate/violence.) the second verse seems to be about futility and things between them falling apart, mostly because the speaker is broken. his self destruction is distancing him from her; he's somewhere far away. and she's challenging him about it... to his face. The gender/sex changes in the chorus i interpret to mean that true love between people has more to do with spirt than with sexuality. |

This song is about casual sex. dreaming of flat fields in some interpretations is symbolic for sex. the author's complaints of how mundane purely sexual adventures are, and how he is in search of a 'cerebral fix' |

people who serve society's masters get rewards, rewards are as follows: ribbons, plaques, soft soap = for civilians bolt pistols = for soldiers "Too bad the tributes paid to lives that relegate these thrones to lives spent valuing the runners-up, are known to be neither fleeting nor desirable" people who don't serve society's masters are punished. revolutionaries are punished. no one tries to change society because there's no hope. |
