| holy shit i posted a huge comment about it paralleling the scarlet letter a year and a half after you wrote this comment without ever seeing it until right now. i fuckin used it for an english presentation too its crazy that someone else had the same epiphany as me while trying to do an english presentation . . . lol just wanted to say that it really does go hand in hand with the book. and i interpreted it totally differently than you too its fuckin crazy that we both did a presentation about this song for the same book and had different viewpoints. | |

idk if it was meant to be interpreted this way, but this song perfectly fits Nathaniel Hawthorne's novel, The Scarlet Letter. its about a woman who has a child after committing adultery in a puritan society in the 1600s she is forced to wear a scarlet "A" on her chest of her dress to signify her crime (having a child while not being married to him,but having a different husband) Seven years later the child is obviously 7 and thats when the story takes place. SO Taking on seven years the holy ghost had left alone Test my arms, kick like crazy I've been trying way to long Only push the way off to fight you I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm not sure Getting off my chest the story ends she wants to be looked at equally and seven years later when her child is growing up she is still being harrassed. the holy ghost part could be a reference to the puritan society and theocracy that everyone lives by. she is left alone by the holy ghost because she recieves no aid despite trying for "way too long" and establishing herself as a member of society. she questions the existence of a god so she is only pushed away off to fight idea of a god and she is sorry, but shes just not sure. and finally, if she gets the letter off her chest, the story ends and is not being harrassed. I would find a way without (Tell him his eyes see too clear) I would find a way without you (Tell him his eyes see too clear) she wants to find a way to live without god but she questions the existence of him, stating that that his eyes see too clearly of the sin she committed. That mistake was gold I know that without you It's something that I could never do That was why staple the eyes and Seven dates for me to sell machines and tear on the mistake she had was gold due to the fact that it has had such an effect. but w/o god is something she couldnt do because her society will not allow it and she is questioning everything. "staple the eyes" refers to the townspeople looking beyond the letter on her chest and to continue buying clothes that she makes for the seven years (sell machines) and to continue their lives (tear on) Seven years you assured me I'd be fine if I complied Only push away off to fight you I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm not sure Getting off my chest the story ends her belief in god would assure her that she'd be fine if she continues to live her life the way society has determined her to. and obviously getting the letter off her chest would solve everything that was why, step in the cold and seven dates for me to sell machines and tear on (if thats what he truly says right here) step in the cold becuase puritan societies in massachusetts had cold winters and part of the novel takes place in winter Don't treat me I'm to blame Don't treat me like I ever accused you (Sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry) (x5) she is to blame for being a sinner and the next line refers to her begging god for mercy and to not punish her for questioning his existence. she is sorry ok, so that is a possible interpretation of the song and whether or not it is about this novel it may be an extreme coincidence of how perfectly it goes with this song and is actually about green's struggles with religion. regardless, i discovered this tie while procrastinating on an english assignment of presenting something about the novel in 11th grade. i was playing the song on my guitar the day before it was due and had an epiphany. whether the epiphany was the real meaning or not is up for the audience to decide. i got a 95 when i used this song for my presentation ;) |
