I think this isn't about these two people being in a relationship, but the girl being in a relationship with someone else, while the guy is friends with her, but in love with her. Her head is "filled up with smoke" because the guy thinks that her judgment is clouded for staying with her boyfriend instead of being with him. "Her most obvious weakness" is the fact that she really wants to be with the guy, but still doesn't want to leave her boyfriend. She shakes at the thought that her and the guy can be great together and the guy clearly wants to be with her more than anyone. They lie close together because they are so close with each other, but they can't lie too close because they aren't actually going out and she can't do that to her boyfriend. He wants to break her down and destroy what she has with her boyfriend so he could be with her, but can't because he's so madly in love and "trips over everything she says", that he could never hurt her. He drinks to try to get over her, but knows that it won't help and instead gets angry at himself for doing it. This is the "violent red". She hollows out his hungry eyes, meaning that she makes him totally powerless because if his intense feelings for her and desires to be with someone. He always thinks that there is going to be some shot and cares about her so much that even though he feels like giving up, he's never going to leave or let her get too far. I think this song is about two people in separate situations that both feel like no one shares their feelings. The boy has probably lost his family or close friends when he says wander off in the evergreen park. Slowly searching. For any sign of the ones he used to love". This could very wellbe a graveyard or something of the sort. The chorus tells him that others feel the same way and can deal with it so he can too. The girl is over protected by her parents who don't want to expose her to the rest of the world, but that stops her from finding herself. She is jealous of everyone else because "Her eyes turn to green" green equalling jealousy. The "you will live to tell" means that they will not commit suicide over their problems and live to tell about how they realized that they weren't alone |

Ok, now anyone who says this song is not about drugs has clearly never smoked weed. "You can't find the words to say" because you're too high to talk "And it makes me feel so fine that I can't control my brain" because you feel really happy but it's a mind altering drug "You don't need no memory" because weed makes you lose short-term memory "And we drift into a zone" because you zone out when you smoke. Island in the sun is the place he goes to when he's high to escape from all the things in life. |
