IN MY OPINION, song seems pretty self explanatory. Its about a relationship gone bad when the girl dumps or even cheats on the guy. Emery uses a house to describe the guys emotions and feelings. *(WALLS = mental way of protecting yourself from getting emotionally hurt by not letting others to get too close, or even by lowering your expectations) The first paragraph of the song shows how much history they have, which has now gone to shit (lines 2-3). She's a tease while waiting on him to persue her again (line 4). (Lines 5-9) he expresses the relationship's current state, and how no matter what happens they will never be the same because of the recurring memories of the heart break/break-up. Second paragraph is a battle between her, his mind, and his heart. He is vulnerable on the inside. He is trying to hide his deep down feelings/emotions from her (lines 10-15). He secretively wants her back in his life. She can see right through him and knows that he is weak and will persue her again, without jeopardizing her own ego/reputation (lines 16-17). He is frustrated at her lack of care for his feelings because he wants her to seek him, not the opposite (lines 18-20)...all of this while trying his hardest to keep his anger on the inside, amazing metaphor "these knuckles break before they bleed," (line 21).(Lines 22-30) The remainder of the paragraph pretty much expresses how he no longer wants to be controlled by her beauty and his feelings which have been so blatantly disregarded. He is striving to protect himself from her by using "walls" and locking her out so to speak. In paragraph three, he snaps back into reality. She has no remorse for what she has done to him, she just finds different ways to avoid the subject (lines 31-33). So he says fuck it. He isn't going to long for her anymore, he is finally able to move on (lines 34-35). But only with the help of his "walls" (line 36). |

Althought the physical temptation view sounds correct, in MY opinion, try reading the lyrics while playing the song and imagine being Christ during his crucifiction in a first person perspective....it's pretty intense. every time the sky breaks open with sunshine and streaming swords collide it takes me back in time I float away to another place where heaven is waiting right outside this is war CAN I TAKE IT ANYMORE I'M FALLING FASTER AND BLEEDING MORE THAN I HAVE BLED BEFORE certain death (this blade will carve a purpose) lingers on the other hand (and make you feel defeated) but i will fight you and victory will be mine in the end --I thought the last part was a mental conversation/battle between Christ and Satan-- resolutions made (in vain) to face (play out) the day life is yours to save (save it) or take (take it) away |

| I personally think he is speaking of someone who has "died" numerous times but has been revived each, such as a someone on life support or a terminal cancer patient. He has met God several times but has been granted more life for some reason. And when he hears "the rain" of "the storm" which ultimately is the begining of another attack from whatever on his life, he wonders if God will continue to revive him. Even though he is mindful that he has not worthy by any means, because he has been too busy for God. The "attack" occurs, he meets God again but is granted yet even another chance at life. Speaking to God: "is it over? i am fine. thank you dearly for your time. i'll be leaving. don't you cry." He then tells God,"i'll be back soon, atleast i'll try" meaning hoping down the road he will be acceptable enough to make it back to "heaven" again. And then at the end he is sending a message to everyone: life is fragile and never guaranteed. So do what you can, while you can to secure your eternity, by starting to live for God and not yourself. | |

As blackfang said, this song is obviously about his grandmother passing. But it does have a Christian influence to it when he says "until I see you again" and "but my heart still bleeds it longs for the day when we will be as one, one, one" talking about meeting again in the afterlife or heaven. Although many songs written by emery can be somewhat interpreted as being about Christ/God, none states it more clear than "the Secret", if your interested. |
