| Recently, a Malaysian model was seen — gasp! — drinking a beer and has been sentenced to 6 lashes of caning. Caning, a practice of corporal punishment, is largely absent from the Western world, but is present in many Muslim countries, and is a feature of Sharia law, the Islamic civil law code, that governs personal behavior. It is normally done with a rattan cane, a flexible wood similar to bamboo, usually a half an inch wide and 4 feet long. Recently, Sudanese journalist Lubna Hussein was sentenced to 40 lashes for the egregious offense of wearing slacks. (Oh lord, protect us from Dockers.)
