i think when they say that they are "talking trash under my window", it may be that he used to be at her window; in movies, boys stand outside of the girl's window. maybe he had gone to resolve things with her, therefore trying to make it romantic and start it fresh, but they ended up in an argument, and he was still standing at her window, simply yelling at each other. just my two cents ;) |

this song is so perfect. it quite perfectly describes what goes through a teenage girl's head, what she deals with and all. i think the last lines, "park that car, drop that phone, sleep on the floor, dream about me" starts off with a simple meaning: park the car, drop your phone, sleep on the floor and dream about me. think about me. be with me. she is pleading almost, in a way, she is begging. but as the song progresses and the lyrics repeat, they become deeper and deeper in the meaning; it's almost like she's saying, stop, stop what you're doing and just live in this moment. park the car. drop your phone. sleep on the floor and dream about me. live, for once. she is getting older, realizing that everything isn't like when she was seventeen, where things didn't matter as much as they did now. and the end lyrics, i feel like they just resurface everything, as if it was just a dream, or a recollection, or maybe just a glimpse into the future. she's back to when she was seventeen, where everything didn't matter as much, except this time she has a little more depth about herself. used to be one of the rotten ones, and i liked you for that. now you're all gone, got your make-up on, and you're not coming back. they definitely have a different dynamic than what they did in the beginning of the song. they are more solemn, more thought-out and soft-spoken. in short, i love this song. |

the crazy electric guitar scared me at first. it was like a beautiful, poignant song that made my heart melt, and then a random drabble of craziness. I almost skipped past it, but I heard the piano at the end and it made so much more sense. I see the guitar as a symbol to the relationship he had with this person all in memorable snippets, as if fast-forwarding a tape and the clutter of noise coming out of it. And the piano is like the end of the tape; everything is over, the chaos is gone, and he is able to stick up for himself and he is at peace with this person, and himself. as for me, this song speaks volumes. it takes a lot of strength to overcome the fear of another person, especially when that someone is so closely related to them. I think that sufjan was afraid of this person, yet he felt bad to just up and leave them, although he was deeply hurt by them and felt like he never good enough. The last line, "I don't regret having left the place a mess," it is so bittersweet. he has been hurt so often and bruised so badly that he just doesn't care, but at the same time, he has finally mustered up the courage not to care. Wonderful song. Makes me tear up every time. |

when i heard this song, i felt like it fit perfectly for my high school. a student who had graduated last year had committed suicide a couple of days ago, and a lot of the school went into mourning. i didn't know him, but my boyfriend did, and he was really down. i think the song is about how the narrator had been trying to make a connection with this girl (or guy?) and saying that she was beautiful and worth everything to the very end. (you make it beautiful friend/you make it worth it to the end) and finally, she let him in. (you put the note in my pocket again). i think that they must have known each other when they were little, and they used to play something like cops and robbers or just childhood games (you put the hole in my head/just like you put a fire in the tree) in the second verse, i think some time has passed; she has changed vastly, maybe even becoming a little suicidal, yet he still loved her (you make it difficult friend/you make it worth to the end) and this time, she was talking to him about hurting herself, and it absolutely killed him (you put a hole in my head). i know i jumped around a bit, but just to summarize, i think it was about someone he loved who was suicidal, and in a way, he thinks he could have done something to prevent it. i could be wrong, but that's how i saw it. lovely song, regardless. :) |

first off, i love this song dearly. i like to think that this is the language of music; not really a clear understanding of what it's saying, yet with the melodies and everything enveloping the music everyone interoperates it in his/her own way. it's absolutely, breathtakingly beautiful. when i first heard this song, it was actually on pandora, and i was just falling asleep in the car. i thought the lyrics, at first, were, "you sound alone," and it made me sit up and listen. it sounded like the main singer was singing to a girl, saying that she sounded alone, afraid, lost, and he was there to comfort her and try and make it better. when i read through these comments, i saw what everyone else was saying made so much more sense. but, at the same time, it didn't. this song is in it's own language, and this was just what i heard. i think they meant it to have hopelandic in the song, so people can interoperate it in their own fashion. absolutely. amazing. |

| i think in this song, she just kind of goes, "screw life's limitations, i'm going to break all of the rules and pretend that there is no common sense involved, and tie up loose ends and make things right." because honestly there are a lot of common sense rules in life... i think she just got sick of them in this song :) | |

i love this song, especially when it breaks out into the round. basically, i think she's saying that he can leave, just promise not to promise anymore because she only seems to be hurt by them, but if he does come around again, she'll open her heart once more, and see how he's changed and if he's really worthy of her love. |

| Ingrid Michaelson – Men of Snow Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| i think in this song, she's saying that sometimes, people can be there just when you need them, and they'll lend you a helping hand, a shoulder to cry on, etc., but they can go as easily as they came. i think she then realizes in the chorus that everyone is kind of like that, like a man of snow, and eventually, we'll melt, or die, one day. | |

i think it's about her son, who was killed on the highway near the atlantic and everything she hears and sees reminds him of her. she almost regrets letting him out into the world, because if she hadn't, he wouldn't have had this type of fate. love the song. gives me shivers. |

wow, i never really thought of it as heroine and crack and prostitution..... i really just took the words to simplicity. except, when it breaks out into the bridge (and those AMAZING haunting melodies) i thought it was like this: "i went walking through the city/like a drunk but not." she was walking, but was really kind of out of it, so she was being clumsy and not really paying attention. "with my slip showing a little/like a drunk but not." maybe she was just trying to be attractive, maybe was just coming back from hanging out with people. "and i am one of your people/but the cars don't stop." bam! she gets hit, and the accident is unintentional and completely accidental. "been a long since before i've been touched/now i'm getting touched all the time/it's only a matter of whom/it's only a matter of when." she's getting help from the people who hit her, the ambulance is coming, the music builds... "an addiction to hands and feet/there's a meat market down the street/the boys and girls watch each other eat/when they really just want to watch each other..." her last thought is of the meat market, she remembers when she used to be on the scene, she thinks of the simplicity of teenage love and dating, sex and deeper meaning. the song builds to it's climax.... "...sleep." the song falls instantly back to it's normal pace, and things are calm again, as if it were just a scenario played in her head. that's how i saw it, anyway. |
