I definitly think the title refers to the realization that he has at the end of his life. He wanted something to happen, and missed all the good things along the way. A very Zen-like view, I dig it.
It's hard though, you know? I find myself wanting certain things, certain relationships to work, and tune out everything for a week because I'm just thinking about another situation. But yeah in the meantime I'm missing what's going on. Summertime also has a similar message, about not realizing that its summer because you're all caught up in yourself.

I used to not like this song at all, I thought it was trying too hard to be about being gay. But then I saw where he was saying that he was jealous of his ex's new boyfriend, and fuck yeah, I like it now, I can totally relate |

This could not be any closer to what happened to me last week. And it's still in winter. Weird how that works, huh? |

Someone should try to get the mathematician's part, that'd be tight. I really like this song, falling asleep to it gives you super weird dreams |

Dig this song, I picture it being essentially about marriage. I can see how it could be just a relationship, but I just kind of picture saying this thing when you ask someone to marry you, being together through everything

It's funny, this song can polarize a lot of people easily. I've heard some super cool hipsters who think the Dead are too old complain about this (stupid, considering the Dead is mainly 4 words...), and on Dead forums some people flip out that a band as ridiculous as this would dare befoul the holiness that is the Dead.
Luckily for me, if there is one band that I listen to that isn't indie it is Grateful Dead. I'm not old enough to be apart of the original touring with them, but their songs have spoke to me so much, and I collect live recordings and obscure acoustic versions and all that good stuff. So this song is a match made in heaven for me, two of my favorite bands in one song, and AC definitly did it justice. I really can relate to "I should be floating, but I'm weighted by thinking". I think we all can to some degree, but that's just how I feel too often, worrying about worthless things. |

Haha, that's funny, this is exactly what my friends and I are like, we listen to indie, but this song crosses over into everything. It's amazing. |

I disagree with the multitudes of blogs saying that this is an amazing song and hoping Sufjan goes in this direction. I have endless respect for Sufjan, but this made me lose a tiny tiny bit of it, which was restored after hearing another new song of his, "There's Too Much Love". That song sounds actually like Sufjan, it's different than the old stuff, but still unique and quirky. I just can't believe the same guy that had jaunty 5/4 rhythms with horns and trumpets, vulnerable and beautifully sung lyrics, turned to White Stripes cover band in one song. Even his voice doesn't sound remotely similar, I honestly thought this was a joke or something.
I really hope his new album goes in the direction of "There's Too Much Love", not this song. |

This song is amazing. The obvious meaning behind this song is the world eventually joining in harmony. I like the first line about the cross becoming a gun and they hit upon the different sects of people that would be fighting with each other, such as soldiers and politicians. I think that the "beyond this fiery stage" part is a reference to earth, as the world is in fire and chaos, but at the end goal (presumably heaven), everyone will celebrate and join as one.
Ah the power of music |
