In the last stanza, the "I think about the salt sea rolling down in pearly tears upon your cheeks" is some gorgeous poetry. More than I'm used to hearing from Andy, anyway.
As to the meaning, I do think it's about an (overly) optimistic sailor thinking that every girl is mourning for his departure and eagerly awaiting the day he will return. I can't tell if they're being serious or facetious, though. |

This song's meaning has always seemed bright and optimistic on the surface; but if you think about the words, it seems to be a sarcastic condemnation of humanity's imperialistic tendencies. For example, the "it's just for me to feed my face" and "it's just for me to kick in space." That's the way I read it, anyway. |

To me, it's always seemed like one of the few XTC songs that give off a sexual, or at least sexy, vibe. The cryptic lyrics combined with the crack-hillbilly music sounds, to me, like a description of backwoods dominatrix. Could just be me, though. ;) |
