John Lennon – God Lyrics 16 years ago
"The dream is over" means real life can begin. All of our unhappiness stems from having false perceptions and expectations; that's why the artificial concept of "God" sold by organized religion is the concept by which "we measure our pain."

JL had gotten back to a simple and real truth, and did not want to be part of anybody's false expectations -- to be anyone but who he really was.

This isn't the end; it's the beginning of hope and truth and reality.

Read de Mello's "Awareness" for another explication of what Lennon's putting out here: in order to learn anything, we need first to unlearn our indoctrination, and we have to be courageous enough to include everything, even that which we've been taught is untouchable and unquestionable. Until you do that, you're not really going to be able to see clearly.

John Lennon – How Do You Sleep? Lyrics 16 years ago
Some write here that they idolize John Lennon and this song is painful for them to hear. I think, if I understand his overall messages, that he would have said "Good -- stop idolizing me. I don't have the whole truth any more than any other person, or book, or ideology. All I have is my story, and I tell it in my music."

The great and beautiful thing about JL is that he left us, through his art, the story of a human being searching for the truth. And that includes all sides of him -- the transcendent, the playful, the painful, the bitter.

The breakup was terrifying and painful. What JL wrote here was not noble, or kind, but an honest record of his low point. I'd say that anyone who claims s/he can't identify with that, is not being terribly honest with him/herself.
