I used to think it was also about an easy girl but after a few plays I realized it's not quite like that. To me, the song tells the story of two lovers who ran away, thus the faith in fast cars. I think he realized, once they got to California and slept together that he didn't really love her--didn't even like her, actually. It sounds like he seriously regrets it. This explanation makes more sense with the lyrics--well, at least to me, it does. For example, "your not spending all your mother's money 'cause that makes you feel secure" sounds like she took money from her mother before running away and she has it all carefully counted so it will last. I can really see it all playing out in my head... A car driving on the freeway at night, the camera zooms in and you see two people looking angry but not speaking. A few flashbacks to the "happy days" and then back to the car. Our couple's sitting in a motel room. He's at the end of the bed with his head in his hands and she's propped up against the headboard, arms crossed. She starts poking him with her foot... Yeah. It's a great song. |
