I've had this song since it came out, and I rarely actually comment on songs on this site, but I felt I should explain the real meaning of this song (because looking at the first string of comments it's apparent that proving your "undergroundness" is more important than learning the meaning of a song). The song is based on the play "Othello" by Shakespeare. "your lipstick, his collar" Lago & Desdemona's secret marriage. "How about I'm outside of your window, watching him keep the details covered"...talking about all the plotting of secret plans to out each other & kill Desdemona "You're such a sucker, for a sweet talker"...Othello being accused of seducing Desdemona with witchcraft but everyone explains that Desdemona fell in love with him because of the stories he told. "clever lines unread on clever napkins"...the handkerchief that can reveal everything but is misinterpreted. |

My husband and I are planning on moving to Washington in the next year or so, and this reminds me of how it's going to be when we do move up there. Washington is the Evergreen state, and from experience, on those dark country roads all you do smell is evergreen trees. To put it simply, being in love while driving home on dark Washington roads. |

Pretty sure this song is about being with a girl sexually, and she loves him and wants to be with him, but he's not sure. Also I think it says "And in the rows in the pastor's church, filled with empty sighs and wine, all of the children have lost their way, lost their way with god" but I don't know the part after that. |
