I love songs that have lines that embrace opposites... "I can't play it safe, but I might just in case" The overall tone of this song is very upbeat from the get-go, but there is something else...maybe a bit of experience? not necessarily in the guitar playing, obviously john frusciante is very experienced in that, but in life? the "voice" of this song sounds like it is coming from someone who is full of life experience and is pondering the everyday struggles that we all go through. remembering mistakes in the past, wishing for them to go away, and then finally realizing that you have to move on and can't dwell in the past. "And things come back you see, to where they don't belong" the best part of the song in my opinion is the closing verse "I'm disguised as a reaching hand, I'm a working man, I don't understand why clockout comes so slow, everytime that's one line I stay right behind" The simple acknowledgement that there is never enough time to do what you want in life but always enough time to work...brilliant |

| Brand New – Handcuffs Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| Its hard to say that any one song has a particular meaning...except for maybe "Happy Birthday", that is pretty straightforward. This song, to me, seems to be about the struggle of being in a relationship, its hard sometimes and easy other times. The verses seem to follow a pattern, the first being negative, the second being positive. Every relationship has its natural "love-hate" moments, and in this song, from the perspective of Jesse I guess, shows how one minute he wants to hurt the person he is involved with and the next, how far he would go to prove his love. like I said earlier its hard to interpret the meaning of songs. All of Brand New's songs have a specific "meaning" that I feel when I listen to them, yet it is hard to explain what that meaning is. | |
