I felt at first this song was about a bad relatioship that just brought you down, but after watching the video I realized it is more specific. I think it is about being love with someone who has an addiction, in the video it seems he is going through withdrawls. At first this song did not hit home but soon after i started dating a recovering herion addict and I listend to it and I understood it on a whole different level. The song is about reaching for someone that is unreachable. At the beginning of the video she is looking in the mirror and on it are the words im sorry. I think this symbolizes that she is apologizing to herself. I also think that the many different Mirandas in the video symbolize her many conflicted feelings each one represents another emotion. She wants to leave, she wants to stay, she loves him, she hates him, she wants to be strong for him, she wants to be weak with him. As she says the lyrics "im puttin out the flame" she also whipes the mirror clean of im sorry. This means she is done apologizing and ready to get out. But then of course she is reminded of his pain and her love for him. As the chorus is playing near the end you see him shaking and smoking a cigarette, while the words break my heart play. This I think is evidence that his addiction is what is breaking her heart. And as she speaks of the pillow, and wishing he was with her, he gets angry and it shows quite a few cigarettes on the table and he is alone. This shows he is struggling with his addiction by himself. At the end when she is circling him with the car I think it symbolizes that she cant get to him only circle around where he is. The fact that she steals his care shows that she is mad at him for everything but has no idea how to express it because he doesnt understand so she resorts to stealing his only way out since he doesnt result to using her as a way out. | this song is basically the story of my life haha. i think overall it is about when you keep making the same mistakes regardless the reasons, and you know its wrong but you keep doing it. and throughout this you are hurting yourself and yet still cannot seem to stop. and i am christian and i totally believe it has to do with religion i think Jason bases most of his lyrics on God but the thing that makes them so different from other christian bands or other bands in general is that you can apply their lyrics in many different ways. | |

AH THIS SONG.. haha i love Lifehouse i love every song Jason has ever written whether it was with the band or solo. i think he has alot of more powerful lyrics but for some reason THIS song is my very favorite. i get chills everytime i hear Standing on top of the world tonight No one's looking back at you Stand tall, it's going on, it's going on It's gonna be just fine You're holding on, holding on today when my life is just chaotic and i feel like im in a never ending mess and cannot control anything not even my own emotions i just mentally picture myself being pulled away from all the chaos and being put high above it. the line no one's looking back at you to me means you are in control, i know there are many other ways to interpret that line ha but thats how i like to think it and then of course stand tall its gonna be just fine your holding on. I listened to it when i was heartbroken, i have listened to it when i had made bad choices that i regretted and felt that nothing could be fixed, i listened to it when someone close to me died. | I think this song is about the death of his parents. I read that he wrote this soon after their death. But i think its more than that i think it also kinda has to do with those sad times when you feel like everything we do in this life doesn't matter because it all will end no matter what. -I saw the dreams you never thought you'd lose tossed along the way- i think this line has to do with growing up with dreams and striving for them and accomplishing them and never ever thinking about losing them, and then you die and you've lost it all. -and now we're grown up orphans- this is talking about being an orphan because he lost his parents but he is older so he is now a grown up orphan. and i think alot of other parts of the song talk about how when someone close to you dies, or it doesnt even have to be someone close you realize life is passing so quickly you feel like you shouldnt be as old as you are you feel like things are out of your control and you wish you could just go back to the past. you start to see all your dreams you had as a child didnt turn out the way you wanted them to like "did you get to be a star" either way i think that every song means something different to everyone but this is the way i see it [: it is a beautiful song and i dont really listen to goo goo dolls but this song has always been a favorite of mine including iris. | |

| i completely and totally believe this song is about God. First, because of the line -and i will walk on water- it is very symbolic. two, because he says -if i could just see you- which shows he is trying to hold on to his faith Jason has talked about God and his challenges through life being the main subject of most of his songs. So knowing that he believes in God also i think shows it is about Him. Everyone has had a time in their life when they either keep making wrong decisions or bad things keep happening to them, and there seems to be no way out. this song is about when you hit rock bottom and realize the only way out is having faith and putting yourself into His hands. i have felt the exact same way and thought the exact same thing-i know you didnt bring me out here to drown- this line gives me strength because it helps me to know that no matter what happens if i look to Him he wont let me drown. Lifehouse is my all time favorite band and not because of Jason's goodlooks or amazing voice, it is because they use music and everything about it to create emotions and strengthen everyone. they see the power that music has and they use it. every one of their songs has a deep emotional meaning and that is hard to say for alot of artists. | |
