Regina Spektor – Us Lyrics 13 years ago
As has been mentioned already, this song is about Russian history. Statues of Lenin, Stalin etc were built during the communist era and are now tourist traps and rusting. Cities (Stalingrad, Leningrad etc)were named after these 'leaders', before being changed back. Now these people and ideas are just history and they were so corrupt it was like living in a den of thieves. When communisim finally fell all the eastern bloc countries 'fell' as if freedom was a contagion. Great song anyway.

U2 – Running To Stand Still Lyrics 16 years ago
The song is I feel about drug addiction.
In the first verse, the women protagonist wakes up and wishes that she could escape her situation "step on a steam train...".
In the second verse she actually succumbs to her addiction - "sweet the sin. bitter the taste in my mouth.." As she gets the initial hit, she feels waves of hopelessness - " you've got to cry without weeping" etc. In this verse she takes the drug because it says - "You know I took the poison from the poison stream...Then I floated out of here".
In the final verse it goes on to talk about the horrible effects of the heroin - she runs through the streets with eyes painted red, under a black belly of cloud in the rain". She obviously 'scores ' some more drugs which is the reference to the pearls and gold. And so cycle begins again. The hopelessness seems to build in the song until all she does is run to stand still.
Just my humble opinions - great song whatever the meaning.

Eurythmics – Savage Lyrics 16 years ago
Absolutely agree with you tad482. The song seems to me about the exploitation of women by men and the vulnerability caused by this.

She said..Everything is fiction ...all cynic to the bone.

Those three lines are so simple, yet convey so much. I think Annie Lennox is a very under-rated lyricist and Dave Stewart a great song writer.

The Human League – Louise Lyrics 16 years ago
I'm amazed that nobody has commented on this song. It is a great piece of song writing - so simple yet so poignant.
The song is about someone who bumps into an old flame. Initially worried how she would react, he is happy that she has forgiven him for anything he might have done in the past to hurt her. After talking for a while, they part on good terms and he feels relief that there is no bitterness on her part.
Classic.
