Sounds like it's about someone very close to the speaker who commit suicide.

Dark Tranquillity – Dobermann Lyrics 9 years ago
To me, it sounds like someone in a street gang, possibly a leader or well-respected man. "Misery's merchants" is a term for the gang members, maybe even the name of his specific gang. "Dogs fleeing in the dark of his path" sounds like members of other gangs fear him. However "He wishes to be something he is not" makes it clear he doesn't enjoy his life. The gang he's currently in is trying to instill their ideology in him. However, only when he blocks out their words does he free himself - and in it, realizes they have wronged him. In the end, he fights back, and makes them fear him the way all his other adversaries have.

Stick To Your Guns – To Whom It May Concern Lyrics 10 years ago
I think the speaker in this song is talking about God.
He has been praying to God his entire life asking for help, but he never got an answer. In the end, he decides he doesn't need God's help to overcome his problems, but takes a stab at him anyway saying "there are those out there who really do need you."
"I'm coming here because I've got nowhere else to go" is referring to a church. The speaker is not a religious man, and has lost his hope and faith in God, but since he has been cast out by society and may be homeless judging by previous songs, he comes to the church as a last resort.

Killswitch Engage – Always Lyrics 10 years ago
I don't know if the band as a whole are christian, but Jesse (the vocalist and main songwriter for this album) is. He even stated in an interview that he turned to God for inspiration. So yeah, this song is definitely about God, and faith.

In Flames – Dawn Of A New Day Lyrics 10 years ago
"I never thought I’d join the others
Those who use the dice to solve"
That line sums up the meaning of the song. The speaker has decided to stop worrying so much about his future and the decisions he makes, and just start living day to day and taking risks and gambles. His decision to start living like this is 'the dawn of a new day' and he enjoys the freedom of it.

My Dying Bride – A Sea To Suffer In Lyrics 10 years ago
Sounds like the speaker is in a maladaptive relationship with a girl whom he loves, yet is harming him emotionally or psychologically. He ends his relationship with her, and finally feels free. Because of the lines "And so now, your time's come, for me girl
To end. Your end. And my birth," I think the speaker may have killed her in order to move on.

Opeth – Death Whispered a Lullaby Lyrics 10 years ago
I don't think that's the meaning the writer intended, but I really like it, and think it gives a sinister twist to an already dark song. Nice interpretation.

Anathema – Nocturnal Emission Lyrics 11 years ago
Taking this song literally, it's about violent, probably non-consensual sex.
The first verse is the speaker thinking of his love (or possibly just lust) for a person whom he cannot have, which is why his lust is forlorn (unobtainable, hopeless).
The speaker is possibly in emotional pain over not being able to have that person (my soul it burns), and decides tonight he will have them.

The second verse is him acting upon his desires and having sex with said person. The lyrics make it clear that he wants to inflict pain upon the person, either because he is a sadist, because he hates them, or because of the pain he himself has been in over not being able to have them.

Because of the verse "in my sleep," I think the second verse of the song may take place in the speaker's dream. If that were the case, the first verse of the song describes the agony of being awake and unable to act on his desires, while in the second verse, the speaker is dreaming, and within his dreams he has control over all, and can do as he pleases.

Almost sounds like a child about to be kidnapped by a pedophile or murderer.

Powerwolf – Demons and Diamonds Lyrics 11 years ago
Best song on their debut, in my opinion. The song could just be another of Powerwolf's fantasy/satanic songs with no deeper meaning, but one interpretation I came up with is the song being about drugs, with diamonds being the drug itself and the elated feeling it brings, while the demons are the physical and mental damage done by the drug.

Hail The Villain – Social Graces Lyrics 11 years ago
Most likely about a person with bad paranoia or psychosis finally loosing it. Could be a continuation of "Swan Dive Suicide", in which he was hoping the sickness would not overcome his will. If it is, this song explains that it does.

Hail The Villain – Swan Dive Suicide Lyrics 11 years ago
Sounds like it's about a mental illness. The song describes how it's controlling his life, and although he's healthy outside, he's a mess internally. The song makes it sound like it's depression, and that he thinks about suicide, but doesn't succumb to it, and is constantly running from that thought. In the end, he's hoping he never does succumb to it.

Hail The Villain – Blackout Lyrics 11 years ago
Sounds a bit like a zombie apocalypse, heheh.
But no, I think this song is about how everyone is a mindless sheep, and their minds are turned off, aka "blackout. The true people in power want to keep it that way, and stop free thinkers; "shoot those who might survive."

Hail The Villain – Pyro Lyrics 11 years ago
About the way some people waste their lives with this behavior. Usually results in them being "burnt out" thus the chorus.

Trans-Siberian Orchestra – Back to a Reason (Part II) Lyrics 12 years ago
One of the most powerful songs I've ever heard. The song actually begins at "time, standing all alone" and everything before that is just part of the story written by Jon Oliva of TSO. The full story can be read on their website. It's beautiful, extremely touching and magical, and this is coming from an atheist.

Meaning:

This particular song deals with the father's feelings of guilt and hopelessness after taking the time to think about how he abandoned his child, and how much time he has wasted on a meaningless life with no love or friends. With these thoughts, he decides to go to his son, telling himself his son is the only reason he has left to live.

"Time - Still they fall on and on and on"
These lines refer to his past relationship and dead wife. They were a happy couple with everything, but lost it all so suddenly. The bleeding refers to the wound in the man's soul, which bleeds eternally ever since the wound his wife's death had on him. The "falling in vain" may also refer to his drops of blood, continually falling, or it may refer to the ghost of his wife's tears, mentioned in the beginning of the story, which eventually froze into snowflakes.

"Got to get back to a reason - Fade from view"
He's trying to remember the way he felt about life when he lived for his wife, and regain that meaning in his life. "This late in the seasons" refers to how during Christmas, what's important seems to become clearer to us, and the things that lead us astray from such things are not present at this time.

"Drifting through the dark - On and on"
Literally refers to his late excursion on this Christmas night. The "Is you life the same?" verses may be him referring to his dead wife, again asking if she cries tears, and feels the years of time passing (Which, in the story, she does).

"I'm looking for you - End"
This is him finally facing his past, present, and future. Realizing he has wasted so much of his life, and doesn't have much time left to make anything of it. It examines his fear of "waking up," meaning, facing his miserable life for what it really is, and ceasing to live in the cold cage he has built around himself. With the remainder of his time, in these moments he is finding the strength to make right what he still can, and face his problems on this night of Christmas. He finally decides that he will do whatever he still can to get to his son.

On a deeper note:
Although this song has a very specific meaning as part of a story, I believe it can loosely be applied to nearly anyone who feels as though they are living only to live, perhaps suffering or in pain, and feeling the weight of time and the past. The fear of seeing life for what it really is is indeed dreadfully scary, and living in a dream is what many seem to do to avoid it. Of course, it can just as well be a song of hope, to those who have finally found something or someone in their life to live for.

Oceana – Antlophobia Lyrics 13 years ago
I'm not sure what this song is about, sounds like someone who has lead a false life by lying to others to get what they want and where they want to be.
Antlophobia means the fear of floods, or excessive amounts of water. That ties in to the album name, The Tide, but I'm not sure how it realates to the lyrics.

Slayer – Cult Lyrics 13 years ago
Kerry King has stated in interviews that he is very much against religion. He wrote this song, as well as most of Slayer's other anti religious songs. I agree that all the serial killing and satanic stuff they sing about is for shock value, but there is actually some truth to the songs like this.

Slayer – Black Serenade Lyrics 13 years ago
I think it's about someone (the narrator) who has put up with another person they can't stand for a long time, possibly they feared the person or felt caged by them, and eventually they were pushed over the edge. To begin with, the narrator already has a demented mind, but has been able to hold it in untill this moment. After they kill said person in a blind fury, they rape the corpse seeking even greater satisfaction of hurting their target's helpless body, in addition to possibly satisfying feelings of necrophilia.

Definately my favorite song off of Chrit Illusion. Slayer's Serial killer/rapist songs always sound so chillingly truthful.

Chiodos – Those Who Slay Together, Stay Together Lyrics 13 years ago
I thought of a similiar meaning. Of course it's really zombies, but the part where they say "We devoured all that we could...biting each and every one" gives the feeling that they are still conscious after being infected, either being a monster like a vampire, or that zombie's can actually think to a degree.

The Used – Now That You're Dead Lyrics 13 years ago
Spoken intro
"I began to float
Up, way above my body
My brain's holding the grip of a giant vice
(It was all very good)
Floating higher and higher, a wonderful feeling" - Someone's comment on an out-of-body experiance, such as when near death.

Corrections: "Your not WITH Jesus Christ, your just gone" as in, you have no life after death.
"How can it feel so right, when it's so WRONG" It sounds more like wrong, and this would make more sense, but if you got "right" from a lyric book i'd believe it.

As Sofa King said, it could about necrophilia (Sexual attraction to dead people), but The Used have never gone that far before, although that would be very cool. It might just be about the narrator's extreme hate for a person, they finally died, and he's so exited he has to confirm it himself.

The Used – Together Burning Bright Lyrics 13 years ago
Awsome song, filled with emotions both sad and calm.
Personally, I think this song has to do with facing a challenge, something really hard, either physically or more likely emotionally. But I think teamwork is a key point, it's something you do together with someone by your side in this song. I do agree with iamlovingthis that it could be about facing death.

Gotye – Don't Worry, We'll Be Watching You Lyrics 13 years ago
I think it's about religion. Someone who all their life has been told what to do, think, and belive (Just do as we say, and we won't hurt you) but "It's hard, The world can lead you so astray. It gets harder, It's hard just to keep the faith" shows that the person has lost hope in those beliefs. There are two narators here, the messanger of the religion, who talks the whole song except the "It's hard" lines, and the person who has lost faith (Possibly Gotye) who does says "It's hard". I'm confused though, because "We'll always be whatching you" could either be good, as in even though he turns his back on religion, God's still whatching him, or, because of the menacing tone, i feel it's bad, as in everyone in his life will be looking down on him for not keeping his faith.

Damn only 2 comments? this song is one of the best i have ever heard. I think he's being literal, like he is revisiting a place from his childhood, and his childhood was abusive or something. It would fit with the rest of the album. However, i don't know what the chorus means, but it's alot deeper.
