I agree with the idea that the narrator is contemplating suicide. It seems that he isn't entirely sold on the idea because he has bought a combination of items which are probably not strong enough to be lethal - a child's dose of analgesic and a low-alcohol drink. Later, after taking this mix, he has a sudden moment of clarity where he realizes it is not a good idea ("Lord, if I make it through tonight, I will mend my ways"). I think the "you" referred to in the song is a person lost to the narrator, someone who he no longer in contact with, who is just a memory now. He spreads out his supplies for the night: an intoxicating mix of liquor, pills, and regret. |
