The Dismemberment Plan – Sentimental Man Lyrics 13 years ago
Or, look at it as a reply to any belief. The last part sums it up nicely, for me. I don't think it's just a "go atheism!" song, though. I think it just asks the question "why believe in anything at all?" and says that asking that question doesn't make you an amoral fuck who believes in nothing at all. It's just a question, not an assertion that you're an unfeeling person, unable to understand empathy.

This song made me think of parents, and their children.
If parents try to hold on too long, it's bad for both them and their kids.
It's like harboring wild animals, really.

It's quite the metaphor. It can be applied to everything you guys have said, too.
Gotta let go of old problems, hatred, grudges, relationships, etc.

King Of Prussia – Misadventures of the Campaign Kids Lyrics 15 years ago
Oh, and here are the correct lyrics, in their entirety.

If we set our reactors to the sun,
Their plan would come undone,
The world would be reformed,
The legislation simply needs a push along.

We anticipate reactions to our points,
Before the guns are drawn,
That’s preemption of our own.
We’ll win their hearts by simply being more informed.

We’re stuck in hotels,
Watching towel girls go by
I’m stumped by your words
You laughed as one caught my eye (I’ve never been without my weaknesses).

The Patriot’s protecting all our sons,
Getting evildoers done,
Tony Danza’s on the run,
He and Mona made the list as fall begun.

Then SPring Right Into Action, up at dawn,
We’ll see that winning can be fun,
We cannot rid them of their guns,
It’s through diplomacy that real change will come.

We’re stuck in hotels,
Watching cards pass us by,
You’re down to one face
I took your Queen without trying (‘War can be a game, you see?!?!!’)

We’re stuck in the West,
Watching cow girls go by,
The night moseys in,
The Gallup’s not on your mind.

“I wish I believed that one man makes meaningful change,
But it’s you that’s got me stuck on this campaign.”

Franz Ferdinand – The Fallen Lyrics 16 years ago
Some say you're trouble, boy,
Just because you like to destroy,
All the things that bring the idiots joy,
Well, what's wrong with a little destruction?

And the critics won't talk to you,
Because you kissed St Rollox adieu,
Just because you robbed a supermarket or two,
Well, who gives a damn about the prophets of Tesco?

Did I see you in a limousine,
Flinging out the fish and the unleavened?
Turn the rich into wine,
And you walk on the mean!
For the fallen are the virtuous among us,
Walk among us,
Never judge us,
Yeah we're all...

Up now and get 'em, boy.
Up now and get 'em, boy!
Drink to the devil and death to the doctors!

Did I see you in a limousine,
Flinging out the fish and the unleavened?
Five thousand users fed today,
As you feed us,
Won't you lead us,
To be blessed?

So we stole and drank champagne,
On the seventh seal you said you never feel pain,
"I never feel pain, won't you hit me again?"
"I need a bit of black and blue to be in rotation!"

In my blood I felt bubbles burst,
There was a flash of fist, an eyebrow burst!
You've a lazy laugh and a red white shirt,
I fall to the floor, fainting at the sight of blood!

Did I see you in a limousine,
Flinging out the fish and the unleavened?
Turn the rich into wine,
Walk on the mean!
Be they Magdalene or virgin, you've already been.
You've already been and we've already seen,
That the fallen are the virtuous among us,
Walk among us,
Never judge us to be blessed.

So I'm sorry if I ever resisted,
I never had a doubt you ever existed,
I only have a problem when people insist on,
Taking their hate and placing it on your name!

Some say you're trouble, boy,
Just because you like to destroy;
You are the word, the word is 'destroy'!
I break this bottle and think of you fondly!

Did I see you in a limousine,
Flinging out the fish and the unleavened,
To the whore in a hostel
Or the scum of a scheme?
Turn the rich into wine,
Walk on the mean!
It's not a jag in the arm,
It's a nail in the beam!
On this barren Earth,
You scatter your seed!
Be they Magdalene or virgin,
You've already been,
Yeah, you've already been,
We've already seen,
That the fallen are the virtuous among us,
Walk among us.
Oh, if you judge us,
We're all damned.

Corrections. Most of it is just nit-picking.

I'll RAID your grave,

NEUROMANCER, perfect blend of technology and magic

we high-tech archeologists searching for KNICKNACKS,
composing musical stimpacks that impacts the SOUL,

on the run with a handgun blast bioforms, I am WARNED,

Living in a post-apocalyptic world MORBIDLY horrid,

original MINSTRELS, my central processing unit

while I FLOOD THE neo-tokyo with opium,

telepathic mind that takes its greatness from the matrix,
ESPER, Rhyme Professor rushes in ultra pressures with correction measures
WHEN half the worlds a desert,

buried under DEEP dirt, mobility INERT,

ever since I had the vision use my MAGNETISM,

in this modern metropolis THAT tries to lock us up,

That's all.

Broken Social Scene – It's All Gonna Break Lyrics 16 years ago
I've got to say, my mind didn't jump to rape at the first lines of the song; nor did it jump to eating shit.
I just figured that it meant, "You set me back quite a bit when I was younger, but I succeeded anyway."
And then, "You know I enjoy this, because it's just so good." I mean seriously, I'm oversimplifying it a bit, but I've heard people say, "Man, these nachos are the shit, they're so delicious." so why should it be any different here?

You might be taking things too literally, that's all I'm trying to convey.

The Antlers – Bear Lyrics 16 years ago
From their blog, this is pretty much only to resolve any question of the lyrics.

Bear
or, Children Become Their Parents Become Their Children

There’s a bear inside your stomach, a cub’s been kicking from within. He’s loud, though without vocal cords, we’ll put an end to him. We’ll make all the right appointments, no one ever has to know, and then tomorrow I’ll turn twenty-one, we’ll script another show. We’ll play charades up in the Chelsea,
drink champagne (although you shouldn’t be), We’ll be blind and dumb until we fall asleep. None of our friends will come, they dodge our calls, and they have for quite awhile now. It’s not a shock, you don’t seem to mind, and I just can’t see how.

“We’re too old.”
”We’re not old at all.”
“Just too old”
“We’re not old at all.”

There’s a bear inside your stomach, a cub’s been kicking you for weeks, and if this isn’t all a dream, well then we’ll cut him from beneath. Well we’re not scared of making caves, or finding food for him to eat. We’re terrified of one another, terrified of what that means. But we’ll make only quick decisions, and you’ll just keep me in the waiting room, and all the while I’ll know we’re fucked, and not getting un-fucked soon. When we get home we’re bigger strangers than we’ve ever been before. You sit in front of snowy television, suitcase on the floor.

The Antlers – Two Lyrics 16 years ago
From their blog, this is pretty much only to resolve any question of the lyrics.

Two
or, I Would Have Saved Her If I Could.

In the middle of the night I was sleeping sitting up, when a doctor came to tell me, “Enough is enough.”

He brought me out into the hall (I could have sworn it was haunted),
and told me something that I didn’t know that I wanted to hear: That there was nothing that I could do save you, the choir’s gonna sing, and this thing is gonna kill you. Something in my throat made my next words shake, and something in the wires made the lightbulbs break. There was glass inside my feet and raining down from the ceiling, it opened up the scars that had just finished healing. It tore apart the canyon running down your femur, (I thought that it was beautiful, it made me a believer.) And as it opened I could hear you howling from your room, but I hid out in the hall until the hurricane blew. When I reappeared and tried to give you something for the pain, you came to hating me again, and just sang your refrain:

You had a new dream, it was more like a nightmare. You were just a little kid, and they cut your hair, then they stuck you in machines, you came so close to dying. They should have listened, they thought that you were lying. Daddy was an asshole, he fucked you up, built the gears in your head, now he greases them up. And no one paid attention when you just stopped eating. “Eighty-seven pounds!” and this all bears repeating.

“Tell me when you think that we became so unhappy, wearing silver rings with nobody clapping. When we moved here together we were so dissappointed, sleeping out of tune with our dreams disjointed. It killed me to see you getting always rejected, but I didn’t mind the things you threw, the phones I deflected. I didn’t mind you blaming me for your mistakes, I just held you in the doorframe through all of the earthquakes. But you packed up your clothes in that bag every night, and I would try to grab your ankles (what a pitiful sight.) But after over a year, I stopped trying to stop you
from stomping out that door, coming back like you always do. Well no one’s gonna fix it for us, no one can.

“You say that, ‘No one’s gonna listen, and no one understands.’

“So there’s no open doors, and there’s no way to get through, there’s no other witnesses, just us two.”

There’s two people living in one small room, from your two half-families tearing at you, two ways to tell the story (no one worries), two silver rings on our fingers in a hurry, two people talking inside your brain, two people believing that I’m the one to blame, two different voices coming out of your mouth, while I’m too cold to care and too sick to shout.

You had a new dream, it was more like a nightmare. You were just a little kid, and they cut your hair. Then they stuck you in machines, you came so close to dying. They should have listened, they thought that you were lying. Daddy was an asshole, he fucked you up, built the gears in your head, now he greases them up. And no one paid attention when you just stopped eating. “Eighty-seven pounds!” and this all bears repeating.

The Most Serene Republic – King of No One Lyrics 16 years ago
First comment, I guess. I like the song.
I think it is about a lack of self-control, or going crazy, and being at peace with that. "Crowds of people are invading my mind" sounds schizophrenic to me, and they seem to have accepted this by saying "My reign ended a while back". Thus, the singer is the King of No One, not even herself.

Kevin Drew – Lucky Ones Lyrics 16 years ago
Some small differences here, so why not?

Well, every time you took me to the lies of your bed,
You know I tried to do it every time that you read,
But all of your words that came down like your spies,
Trickled through the morphine and tried to make a crime.
I don't expect to suggest that we're through,
You know I can live without you if you do,
But tell me that the temperature is rising in your head,
Tell me the blood is not to be misled.

All these little boys coming through the cracks,
Trying to pick up the things, performed all the slack.
I've seen the broken fences right down to the line,
Green like a mind that said it never was retired.
I know, I know, I know it's true,
All the things you thought about I want you to do,
But when the clouds separated, in comes the sun,
Hurry through the song that a girl once sung.
She's the reason why I'm trying to make it alright,
Trying to drive through to Croatia tonight.
Wanna lie beside her with the wind in my hand,
Trying to be a stereotype with a plan.
But my love of god and my god is love,
That's why you do with all the things of the above!
Don't you expect to make a phone call tonight?
Treat me like a mother****** who is right.

Ooh, I know we're gonna be the lucky ones.

Every time the future comes into my past,
I know you should sing about things that will last.
I got a prize in Never Never Land,
Took a tattoo and tried to make a new friend.
You can see the ideas coming right through the glass,
Everyone speaks about some things that they're past,
But I don't decide whether I can believe,
Take me to your bed and show me some trees.
I don't like the feather bed in your home,
Try to tell you that there's plenty to roam.
You're like the blood that lives inside my bed,
I'm not to tell you that you are not misled.

Ooh, I know we're gonna be the lucky ones.
