I think it's about a couple who have stayed in a relationship because they were both hanging on to the emotional appeal of how their relationship used to be, even though the relationship had long been doomed. I think he cheated on her, & stayed with her because he needed that emotional connection that sometimes sex can't give you. Think about it...why do people cheat, yet stay with the person they cheated on? They want someone to adore them...they need the ego fill & the peace of mind that comes from knowing that person will be "there" for them, as opposed to having someone who just immediately takes their clothes off whenever you see them & doesn't ask about your day, or let you talk about yourself. & when the truth came out, he was so apathetic towards her, that he turned cruel. I think the lyrics have a very mean tone to them. But I think she was a pain in the ass first, & drove him to be a jerk. Well the truth it fell so heavy Like a hammer through the room That I could choose another over her When she found out, it was devastating that he could pick someone over her...obviously that means their relationship must have once been held in very high regards...to the point where they--& everyone who knew them as a couple--could not see them not being together. You always said I was an actor, baby Guess in truth you thought me just amateur He stayed with her while he cheated. His g/f would make comments saying he was an actor, yet did not catch on to the fact that he was cheating--thus he states she must have only thought he were an amateur actor, because throughout their relationship he was acting--just playing the role of a boyfriend, & she did not catch on. He's being a jerk here, mocking her. 'You thought I was an actor, well I sure fooled you by cheating on you this whole time, so you must have only thought I was an amateur actor, when really I played you & I'm the next Brad Pitt.' That you never saw the signs That you never lost your grip Oh, come on now That's such a childish claim Sounds to me like she was doing things that pushed him away...she lost her grip...she nagged him...she got mad over stupid things...she put him down. I think she probably questioned why he cheated, & this was his response. & she claimed to be level-headed & the perfect g/f, which he finds to be a childish claim. Now I wear the brand of traitor Don't it seem a bit absurd When it's clear I was so obviously framed When it's clear I was so obviously framed I think he is blaming her for him cheating...something she did to drive him to cheat. Now you act so surprised To hear what you already know And all you really had to do was ask I'd have told you straight away All those lies were truth And all that was false was fact She is not accepting blame, either. I think she was just a nag, & tried to change him after she was wonderful in the beginning & then turned sour once they got very close. & she tries to act like she never did anything to make him want to turn to another. Was it you who told me once Now looking back it seems so real That all our mistakes are merely grist for the mill She's the one who told him mistakes are an opportunity to learn what not to do next time. So why is it now after I had my fill That you steal from me the sorrow that I've earned Here he is saying he's had his fill of mistakes, branding her as a mistake, yet she takes the attention from it, she takes his sorrow that he feels for her & the way she's treated him & tries to turn it around & make him feel like he doesn't deserve to feel sad, only she does. Shall we call this a lesson learned? Shall we call this a lesson learned? learn from your mistakes. I know I've learned from every single mistake I've made in my relationships. That's what he uses for closure--let's just call it a lesson learned. Bottle it up & tuck it away. |

Also, i really just think it's a song about his control over the girl. the line "i'll be the reason you'll leave this city" just shows that he believes he can exert power over the girl. same with the "this is how i will keep her, in pieces, she's a keeper line"....he likes that she's broken, because she will "need" him more than any strong independent girl would. "My straight-faced grin is the first to leave Hand in hand with the queen of tragedy" It amuses him that she needs him to feel ok about herself. "straight-faced grin" He's only smiling on the inside, because he can't expose this need for power to her. "Why do I hurt just on purpose? I guess I lack a purpose" Yet the relationship hurts him, despite the fact that he does it to himself by staying with her. "So smile like a child sitting in the sea Forget about what's in the water and just focus in on me" A child sitting in the sea could mean a child drowning. but he tells her to forget that she's drowning in the misery of her own life, to "forget about what's in the water"...darkness..depth...& death, & to just focus on him. he wants to be the king of her life. a king, or hero, for the queen of tragedy. "I'll be the phantom of the opera I'll be the lantern you blow out first" if you know the story of the phantom of the opera, the phantom tries to control the girl & is very protective of her & who she gives her love to, he wants her to himself. makes sense with the control aspect of the song. |

i think he's just breaking dating a girl that he finds mediocre. & i think she's pretty messed up, any "pornographer's daughter" would be, i assume. "I can't leave with words like these They'll break the bones that hold up my sleeves" Maybe they got in a fight & he didn't want to leave on those terms...the words said break his bones..."sticks & stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me", he's admitting the opposite of that. "I've got to tie her so high her breath freezes before she speaks" He has to stay to put her in her place so that he shuts her down to the point that she has nothing to say back. "But this bus just won't go far enough So I'll strap my face to a homemade bomb And blow the bus stop through the parking lot We'll celebrate like we were free" I don't know about this one...maybe the "bus" not going "far enough" is a metaphor for whatever drug he had taken wasn't doing the trick, so he has to take more. "strap my face to a homemade bomb" could mean he's submitting to taking more of the drug, even though it is destructive like a bomb. most drugs are in a sense, "homemade". & because he's taken so much, he is completely out of his mind, thus blowing "the bus stop through the parking lot" in order to "celebrate like we were free". he's feeling unrestrained & invincible. "I know a place where we can both get laced Take some time to learn about your face" A lot of drugs are sometimes "laced" with traces of other drugs & anyone who has ever gotten high knows that your brain enables you to see things differently in those moments, which would enable someone to really pay attention to the details of another person's face. "About bawling and bell curves, about strength from inhalers" I think he's talking about the girl here. she's probably messed up...maybe she starts crying after they get high. the bell curve could be a reference to the statistical concept. A lot of things can be placed on a bell curve & measured that way. the center of the bell curve is known as the median, or mean, which separates the greater half of the sample from the lower half. he could be placing this girl on a bell curve, & judging her worth to him. the strength from inhalers part, well, i have asthma, & when i start really crying, or bawling, i can't breathe. but also, they could be using the inhaler as a pipe. "And I'll take the fifth and you can just sit And I'll watch from a distance while you open it" possibly, pleading the fifth, or keeping silent, maybe he's holding in what he really thinks about her, so he keeps silent & watches her "from a distance," or rather allows himself to be disconnected from her as she unleashes a floodgate of emotion. "This is how I will keep her in pieces, she's a keeper" I love this line. She's sad, messed up, unraveling before him, & he likes it that way. Her life is in pieces, & to him, because of this, she's a keeper. "And I'll be holding my breath with the best My breath with the best intentions" Maybe a drug reference again. or maybe back to him keeping silent. or maybe he's waiting for her, hoping for the day that she heals. "This is not for me, your perfume struggles perfectly It wraps around and screams at me 'My hero tastes like plastic, he's elastic and now he's dead'" Great imagery. He feels the relationship is not for him...or maybe her "perfume" could be smoke from the drugs, & he knows that's not the life he wants, but because he relates it to something as concrete as her perfume, or the way she always smells, he has to realize if he stays with her, that he has to stay with the drugs, too. The hero part...it could be a reference to her father...most girls are daddy's girls...I know my dad is my hero..but if she's the pornographer's daughter, her dad probably isn't much of a hero to her. The elastic part could couple with the bell curve & economics. Price elasticity is the measurement of how much a good or service would still be demanded if the price were to fluctuate, or be elastic. If the price of a good or service goes up, would the demand remain the same? or would it decrease? If it is something someone needs to live, such as insulin or some other medicine for a chronic illness, people will pay whatever they have to in order to get it, so the good is inelastic. but if the girl's father is not her hero since he is plastic, or fake, then she doesn't need him, making her demand for his love elastic, when she has to work harder in order for him to supply it, so she gives up, thus making him "dead" to her. |

but the girl on the car in the parking lot says: "man, you should try to take a shot. can't you see my walls are crumblin?" then she looks up at the building and says she's thinkin of jumping. she says she's tired of life, she must be tired of something. that would be a reference to "round here" by counting crows |

And our bodies got so much clearer With dirty blood and thirty last calls So fill it up and spin forever down the wall I throw it up just to watch it fall Gin is clear. Your body would get much "clearer" the more that you drink. Bars usually have last calls, often times more than one because it's so hard to kick drunk people out. Dirty blood could mean a bar fight or maybe a bloody mary or something, i'm not sure about that one. Fill it up...fill the glass up...spin forever down the wall...the room spins if you get too drunk. I throw it up just to watch it fall...throwing up alcohol...saying that there's no reason he really drinks. |
