Hard to believe it's been over 15 years since I heard this song in my friend's basement in high school. Catchy now as it was then, but those intervening 15 years have given me a perspective on this song that can be summed up with the words "life is a gift." |

First off, as a longtime Ohioan, I have to laugh at "this place is flatter than it seems."
This song seems to fit in with other Modest Mouse songs that use landscapes and geography to look inward at human hearts and minds. "Our hearts are used up, cracked and dry" like endless mediocre Ohio farmland in late summer. Ohio is "the heart of it all," according to our license plates at least. Long hours spent driving across Ohio in introspection and you start to wonder if your inner landscape has the defects apparent in that of Ohio. A lot going on underneath? Or maybe just boring old roots pipes and drainage leaks. Maybe we drown our deeper impulses in entertainment like Ohio teens in suburban arcades. Even night, that pure blackness common to every place, is polluted by artificial lights. Am I as artificial as this bleak vision of Ohio? This is a good example of a modest mouse song full of a pseudo despair that I suspect has left many looking for something deeper and something more. |

I like this band because the meaning of their songs seems generally more accessible, and more constructive, than other popular bands. This song is no different. The juxtaposition of the opening scene in the music video, adoring crowds, with the repeated refrain of "rock bottom" is something everyone can relate with: at our highest and proudest, there is the shadow of an almost equally strong darkness. Reference: countless rock stars dying by suicide or drug overdose. "Another high, another low." Is this not the story of all of our lives? Here's a band at the summit of success being vulnerable and telling us that no matter where life takes you, you are a cohesive whole whose baby videos and childhood dreams are somehow every bit as significant - perhaps moreso - than the greatest fame and fortune. |
